I don't know if it can be empirically proven that it speeds up or slows down the drive-thru, but it sure as shit makes things awkward

My local CFA doesn't have a drive thru. It's in the middle of a downtown type area (well, it's actually up town, but you know) so everybody has to order inside.
When they're really busy in the warm months, they'll put someone outside to get orders in (cuz the line will quite literally go out the front door in peak hours) --- Alkaloid: It's just water in a cup. ... Copied to Clipboard!

They do this at the various in n outs here I SoCal since the drive thru lines get crazy long at some locations

It gets food done fast. You turn 5 min waits into 2 min wait for car 1 and then 10-20s for the next 5. Keeps their drive thru times down so they're not extra stressed and you get faster service. Sure it's awkward but in the end it helps everyone.

With employees outside taking orders, they can queue up orders much further back in the line (even having two or three lines of cars), so all people have to do is take their order and go once they get to the window. --- ... I know In N Out does it too so they could put more burgers on the grill ahead of time.
