This past month I have been interviewing for a job thats a step up from my current position in the city and now Im at a situation I havent encountered before. Ill give you a time frame first.

March 6th was the first interview with 5 people. The hiring manager and some people of the team I would work with. Lasted for about an hour.

March 9th they let me know they want me back for the second round and that they will confirm a date with me later

March 19th they inform me that March 23rd will be the next interview

March 23rd I meet with the hiring manager and her boss and discuss my background for about 10 minutes, we then go into a conference room with about 9 other people who make up a large portion of the remainder of the team. They each asks me a question and this last about half an hour. The hiring manager informs me that they will be aiming to make a decision by the 28th.

Yesterday I get an email from the hiring manager saying she wanted to touch base and let me know they need just a little more time making a decision.

Yesterday I got an email asking if I could call her before the end of the work day. She informs me that the team wants me to go out to dinner with them on Tuesday at 6:00 pm for food and drinks. Then, on Thursday I will be meeting with the director of the department one on one for a 30 minute meet and greet. She said not to worry about bringing my resume and not to worry about being ready for interview style questions and its just a meet and greet.

What do you all make of it? How much completion do you think I have left at this point?

If you've gone out to dinner with the team and will be meeting with the department director, I can't see much else left to do.

May be just stalling for HR/Payroll to finish their shit before you can start.

Every year the interview process gets longer and longer. Just roll with it while applying other places.

If they ask about it, say you've had interviews at several other companies (don't ever be specific with their nanes) but you are most interested in working with them.

So do you think they would be taking other candidates out to dinner on separate occasions or that Im the last one left?

If youve been invited out for dinner and drinks it sounds like youre pretty much done. I cant imagine theyd spend money (if the company is paying) on someone they didnt intend to hire. Either that or they just want to see how you mesh in a social setting with the team.

Id suggest not drinking more than whoever is the highest ranking person there, if you drink.

Sounds like these people have no idea what the fuck they're doing, and don't mind wasting money while they're at it. You've already interviewed way more than you should need to for what I'm guessing is only a mid to senior level position based on the people you described talking to.

Realistically, tbh, the dinner is probably less of a waste of money than having people conduct interviews on company time, depending on what they make. If somebody makes $60k, then an hour of their time is an almost $30 dinner.

So youre thinking they arent doing this again and again?

Oh chewy.

Yes TC, I doubt every candidate gets invited to dinner. All of SH's posts are jaded and can usually be disregarded.

Dinner doesn't really mean anything, as I said before it may even be a cost-saving way to interview. If they were ready to give him an offer, there's no reason to keep stringing him along with a dinner and another interview, unless this company is just totally clueless.

Sunny, you are (were?) a fry cook, so I doubt you have any recent experience with interviewing in professional industries. The process the TC described is not normal.

From 21-33 years old, I worked in the biotech/pharmaceutical industry.

I've only worked in the restaurant industry for the last 2 years. It's honest, hard work. People like you that keep acting like it's unskilled labor are the worst. Do me and everyone else in the industry a favor, never eat out.

If they're taking you to dinner, you're probably one of the final group. You might only have 1 or 2 competitors. For high-paying jobs, it's not terribly unusual to have a lot of rigamarole. That said, they might also be unsure about you still so... there's no guarantee that they'll hire you or close quickly although the more you see them the better sign it is usually.

Granted, I'm not sure what industry you're in, what sort of job you have now, what you're going for, etc, so it's hard to say.

I mean you might as well go to the dinner and interview unless you really have something better to do or are sure you don't want this job. It sounds shitty that they're putting you through all this, but you might as well see it through just in case

The dinner went well. Some of the team said certain things that indicated to me they havent been out to dinner with anyone else.

I also found out that the meet and greet with the director will also include the hiring manager who has been the constant throughout all of this and her boss and Im fairly sure these are the people who would need to be involved to making an offer... so here is to hoping..
