The have this free trial thing, and even though I owned it (and probably still have an account), I didn't feel like looking it up and just decided to try the free trial.

I didn't play that much even when it came out, as it seemed like a FF themed WoW clone, and I wasn't even a big fan of WoW (although I was in the beta and maxed 3 classes on release...I did that in 2 months....so it wasn't a long term enjoyment.

So I started as an archer, and the combat is mind numbing. It just makes me want to go back and play Dungeons and Dragons online again or something.

Even KoToR was more fun, and that game was so easy that my cat got bored playing it because she didn't even have to pay attention to which keys her paws hit.

Sad that a text based mud is still more fun/stimulating after all these years then most of the MMO's out there.

I feel like I know more people who play FF Online than WoW, they all seem pretty big fans of it. I've never tried it.

I have been playing Final Fantasy XIV for the past 4-5 years. Overall the gameplay doesn't feel that special in my opinion. What keeps me playing is the story and simply playing with friends. I use to care about gearing up but like any MMO, unless you run endgame content, gearing up serves little to no purpose so now I just take my time with the story instead. In the case of the current expansion, Stormblood, the story is no where near as interesting as Heavensward for me so I am really taking my time with the main quest line.

FFXIV is only two expansions in so maybe it's too early to say but it just seems the overall formula of the game has been the same since A Realm Reborn. I visit the FFXIV board occasionally and some folks suggest Square Enix and/or Naoki Yoshida simply seen no reason to make drastic changes if the current formula works.

It could just be because I have been playing various MMORPGs since 2005ish and between World of Warcraft, Warhammer Online, DC Universe Online, Lord of the Rings Online, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Wildstar, and Final Fantasy XIV the overall feel of these MMOs is about the same and/or I am just burned out so FFXIV doesn't feel special to me. At the same time, the various references to previous Final Fantasy games and just the typical FF theme could be why some folks find it interesting.

Coming from World of Warcraft, it did feel very slow to me. The 2.5 second global cooldown combined with your class having a only handful of skills in the beginning made it boring to some degree.

On the flip side, in the more difficult content, that 2.5 second global cooldown kinda makes it more interesting. It forces you to be mindful of what you do since, as a healer, if I'm DPSing during some downtime and suddenly the tank takes a chunk of damage, I might be stuck unable to cast any heals for up to 2.5 seconds which is potentially enough time for the tank to take fatal damage.

Yeah, all the MMO's you mentioned (even LoTR to some extect) have similar content.

There are some like Dungeons and dragons online with more action based combat though. I prefer those.

The only thing that can make me play the WoW like combat system games (especially where you don't actually control your characters advancement much, and follow a set path), is playing with friends.

I did that with Kotor, but...sadly, playing with friends makes an already easy game.....so easy it was pathetic (also had an exp multiplier going at the time I think..so we were always over leveled as well).

No challenge at all is not fun for long.

Might try to play a bit more, but if I don't like the combat AND I don't have any need to pay attention to character advancement or no control over it, there is nothing to keep me playing a game. Story/theme alone won't do it for me, though it is important if the core gameplay is fun.

I'm in a FF kinda mood right now, so was hoping I would enjoy the MMO...it's been years since I played it last. Might try a more melee class or something, as the whole, shoot something a ton before it gets to you...setup really takes any fun out of it. I think I stopped last time because partying was so important later on though, which would probably still be a problem today.

FF14 is actually really solid. If you think the global cooldown is too high, you can always try ninja or monk. Monk especially you'll be working your hands constantly with the low cooldowns and constant positional hits (rear/side of monster) for optimal damage. Both of those classes have buffs which lower their global cooldown to about 1.5 or less, so technically faster than WoW would be. If i recall monk has several off-global attacks as well.

Monk was actually super engaging once you get to around lvl 15 or 20.

Dungeons are like the best part of the game though. 4 members just like a lot of the older FF games. Actual teamwork and hard fights with pretty nice mechanics in the boss fights.

I would add to this that Dragoon, while having one of the slowest GCDs in the game, has tons of off global cooldowns, so you'll be weaving in cooldowns in between GCDs constantly.

I still enjoy FFXIV for the most part, unlike my time with XI. The Land of Eureka, though? I think that place has too many issues, to say nothing of how alike it is to XI.

I have never liked MMO's and if I was the only people I know who play them are all on WoW, so I would play that instead. No one I know plays/played FFXI or FFXIV.

Yeah Eureka is a bit disappointing. At least building all relics seems like it will be pretty easy this time around.

I'm so glad that my Eureka-Anemos grind is almost done. Just 2212 or so more Anemos Crystals to go and I'll have my second and third armor sets complete, and all hopefully before the place becomes far less populated (which is bound to happen soon). Best to do it while it's feasible. <_<

Yea. I love it. WHM and SAM with RDM being raised up (and I'll probably hit WAR next). The early stuff is slow and annoying, but it does really pick up a lot, especially once you have enough dungeons unlocked for things like the roulette's. The battles, even for mundane groups, are much harder than what's in WoW and require you to pay attention to a lot of things going on. Rotations can get pretty complicated as well. For example, as a Samurai my BASIC damage rotation involves eight different button presses, and I have multiple 'off' points on where to use my finisher depending on the need. Do I need to apply a DoT? That's one combo string with my finisher. AoE? Two strings and my finisher. High damage? All three of my combo strings before the finisher, and that's not even touching on things like Kenki balance and distance gaining/closing.
