I got a new Honda Civic 2016 in December of that year. Now the dealership is trying to entice me to trade it in for a new one. I've done it before, but I remember having waited longer.
How long should you wait to trade in?

Of course he wants you to trade it in.

The value and equity is gone as soon as you take the car off the lot

Yes and no. You can still get 6-7k trade in value, which knocks of the cost of a newer car.

You should never trade in. Private sell value is always higher than trade in value.

Put it on Craigs list, then use that money towards another car.

But you're still on average paying more per year since you're paying for a car more often

I don't trade in but I tend to get a newer vehicle every 5 years or so. Doesn't mean much since the two vehicles I have are 13 and 15 years old.

That's true. But if you catch it in the middle, when your car starts to need a bunch of repairs and maintenance and shit, trading up saves you the cost of that kind of maintenance, plus you don't have to get tags for two years.

How long should you wait to trade in?

Dealerships have their new blood call folks who've purchased in the last couple years in an effort to bring you in and 'reduce' your payments. What they do not check is your equity position. The proper answer to "when should I trade in my car" is: Whenever you feel like you're done with it and are ready for more payments. Don't ever feel pressured to trade just cuz 'WE NEED THAT CAR REEL BAD MAN OUR USED CAR LOT IS LOW WE'LL GIVE U TOP DOLLARRRRRRRRRRRRRR"

that just sounds like leasing. buying a new car every 2 years would be a terrible idea

If you want a new car all the time then do a lease. Buying a new car only makes sense if you keep it as long as you can.

I dunno. I've always been leery of leases. I like the option to hold on to it if I want to.

Just get a lease, god damn. Leases give you the option to own the car after the initial 2 years or however long is up.

You're very literally throwing away money if you're financing and returning the vehicle every two years. Leasing has changed in the favor of the consumer in the last few years. Definitely something I'd look into if I were you.

this tbh. longer if it's still good. i'm on my 3rd car now. first was a junker with over 200k miles on it i got given to me. kept it for 2 years before it rusted out. bought a cheap car with 90k miles on it and kept it almost 9 years. got a new car late last year. well new used car. only had 12k miles on it and was much cheaper than buying brand new. got a cheap loan rate on it to pay it off. i plan to keep it at least 10 years before getting a new one. usually 10 year 100k miles is when things start to go wrong with it and it gets more expensive to keep running. but if it's still going strong at that time then i'll keep it till it starts to become a headache and then upgrade.

No. Not if it Is what you enjoy. Neckbeards on reddit think a car is only to get the cheapest car and drive it until it explodes. I love cars and I love my car and I don't get a vehicle until I know I'm gonna like it. Its ridiculous to me that people just buy the Honda civics
