The trash battles drag a bit, which is a common consequence of having a more complex battle system, and I really wish party members would get exp when they weren't in the party, but it is indeed a fantastic game.

They added an exp and money dlc for the remake that helps lessen the grind somewhat.

My understanding is the remake includes some kind of battle skip option, but I don't recall the details. I haven't played it, though, so I can't say for certain.

Party members not in battle do get experience. Even KOed members still get experience.

They do, but not when they're completely absent from the party, as happens quite often given the nature of the game. If Stocke's your only party member, Stocke's the only one getting experience.

It's definitely in my top 5, and I think it's better than even Chrono Trigger /blasphemy

I think the battle skip option is for Easy mode, where if you hit enemies in the field, instead of going in w/ a likely pre-emptive strike, you instead just auto-win. If I ever replay this game a 3rd time, I'll probably do easy mode just to enjoy the story w/o the battles dragging things out, so it's nice it's there.
The game has always had the invisibility spell Stocke gets early on to just skip non-mandatory fights at the cost of some MP, too.

It was a great game. I also understand the complaint about the battle system dragging, but I personally didn't get that. I actually enjoyed trying to stack enemies and getting as many attacks stacked as I could.

It's more of a new difficulty mode you select at the start.

If you choose Friendly mode, you can 1 shot all enemies on the overworld with your sword, so you can just progress through the story. You still have to fight bosses though.

There's a caveat though. You can switch between Normal or Hard in-game, but once you either choose Friendly or Nightmare mode, you're stuck like that until you finish the game.

The best one on the DS? Sure, I'll give you that.

All-time? Lucky if it gets into the top 25.

I also enjoyed that, but the problem was that there wasn't much variation in that once you'd seen all the available layouts for a given trash enemy and figured out how to stack them up efficiently. Then it just took a while to execute that plan, and especially in earlier levels, a significant chunk of MP (necessitating more trips back to town for restorative items). I found that got a bit tedious, especially when doing any level grinding (thanks to the aforementioned lack of exp sharing with missing party members).

Don't get me wrong, I loved the battle system and the level of strategy it offered. I just wasn't huge on having to exercise that strategy in every single fight. That's nothing really specific to RH, it's a problem with a lot of games that have more complex battle systems (if enemies don't have enough health to warrant stringing together combos for damage bonuses, there's no reason to use the battle system's complexity, but having every enemy be a damage sponge isn't necessarily fun either).
