Mine has a greenish tint which means it needs a new red gun right?

Uh I don't even know if people do that anymore. It probably would be cheaper and/or easier to just try getting a new one. I got mine for free on craigslist - but that's the downside, I think people have a hard time getting rid of the things, so good luck ditching your old one if you do decide to get another. See if your city or any nearby ones have an electronics recycling program

If you really need one fixed your best bet is probably either looking for tutorials online and doing it yourself or checking to see if there is a general electronics repair place in your area that might be able to do it

Either way it is likely gonna cost more to fix the thing than it is worth

Opening up a CRT is generally considered a bad idea, though I suppose that could just be some misguided conventional wisdom. I also used to hear you shouldn't open up your computer, but that doesn't faze me at all now. If you really do try to fix it yourself, though, research the safety risks and precautions, do some basic reading on capacitors, find out what contains mercury, etc.

He should really just get a new one though. With what he's describing, he'd probably have to replace one of the more dangerous parts in there. And there's no real guarantee that it would work or that it would be easy to find the right part. It's really not worth all the labor even if it does work out

Yeah crts are extremely dangerous but I like retro gaming. This ebay buyer just charged me 60 bucks for a thing I cant dispose of that has a green/teal/blue tint. Is repairing it economical at least?

Yeah, DO NOT do it yourself. Those things also hold a pretty big charge. Touch one wrong thing and you're going to get a massive jolt of electricity.

My parents were pissed when I bought the first cvm crt on eBay. Because I have an lcd 32 inch for 100 bucks. I got the crt for 60 but it has a green tint.
How much would a repair cost in your estimate?

My parents wont let me order other stuff online living in their roof. So I am hoping to deal with the tint for the year and get it fixed professionally for Christmas present maybe. I know it is sad my parents run my life and I work minimum wage. Shipping a tv can be a pain in the ass and I do not want my parents to know it is bad.

I was doing a bit of research since mine turned magenta (I heard something fall behind it not long before it went magenta, so I'm thinking it might be a solder joint that got broken), and it seems that unless the TV is over 15 or 20 years old, the danger of the charged capacitor is no longer there. They started adding components that discharge it early in the 2000s.

Ship it anyway for your money back and at least your parents will know you can take responsibility for your actions and not be wasteful with your money. If you want a Christmas present, get a newer, working CRT.

Well CRTs are extravagantly expensive to repair. Think thousands of dollars. They also poison you with mercury when used.

Just another example of retro tech being inferior to modern environmentally friendly lcd. Soon to be OLED LCD

Why would your parents be mad if you returned it? You can probably even get the buyer to pay the return shipping.

How did you get ripped off so badly? You paid $60 for a 13 inch? Lol. Did you check if there are any free ones on Craigslist? Would they still get mad even if you weren't spending anything?

OLED can cause burn-in, though. Regular LED LCD is still the best, imo.

We tried for ages to get rid of our old 42 inch crt. It weighs like 300 pounds and has really thick glass on the front. Nobody wanted it. The damn thing is still in our storage unit. I guess we'll deal with it when we decide to clean out the unit.

You charge them for postage as they mislead you, and you back it up with threat of small claims. It's also not about the money but the principle.

It's easy if you have a basic understanding of electronics and watch a bunch of YouTube tutorials. I'm betting it's old capacitors, cold solder joints or a failing transistor. The color drive transistors get pretty hot and over time it cracks the solder joints and makes poor connections. The capacitors dry out over time, drifting their value or outright stop working throwing stuff out of whack. I've rebuilt dozens of CRT monitors in my arcade games and it's never more than $60 dollars in parts, including a new flyback. The only thing that requires more than a basic soldering iron and desoldering braid is a gun issue in the tube, but someone with a rejuvenatior could probably fix that part. Post a picture of the screen and maybe I can help more.

Most recently I rebuild the monitor and audio boards on my Donkey Kong, I do a lot of electronics work so I have a desoldering pump, it makes it way faster.
