I've been hearing for awhile that it's "the most underrated show on television." I'm midway through season 1 and it's fine enough... But still very serialized and not super compelling. Does this pick up or what?

the arc of it gets consistently better through S4, i think
that said, if you're not persuaded by the end of S1, you might never be and for my money, the pilot is probably the best episode of the show's run --- yet all sailors of all sorts are more or less capricious and unreliable - they live in the varying outer weather, and they inhale its fickleness ... alright, i'm glad you agree with that at least! in that case we can be friends. S1 does feel a bit slow (hell, every season does) but the burn pays off and the acting from the primary constituents is always flawless
it's a show about the toll that this life takes on people, so the set pieces can feel agonizingly few and far between - but it always succeeds when it does htem --- yet all sailors of all sorts are more or less capricious and unreliable - they live in the varying outer weather, and they inhale its fickleness ...
