Lol, I proved it by showing you how little you understood in that topic a year ago.

But sure. Tell me Ulti, what is Common Core?

Common Core education is trash

Wait what??

I've literally never heard anything about that. I thought it used some super advanced education tech and was causing kids to become hella smart like the orientals.

Do you have more info on this? This is pretty massive dude, you should write an article or two about it. People need to know. How did you even get this info?? Maybe you can TEACH us how haha ;)

I agree that the metrics required in common core curriculum can be implemented in ways that result in terrible questions/situations/etc.

They can also be implemented in ways that make sense.

If I gave you the instructions "Use peanut butter, jelly, and bread to make food" then a few different things could happen.

- You could take two slices of bread, apply peanut butter to one, jelly to the other, and put the peanut butter and jelly sides together to make a normal peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

- You could take a handful of peanut butter (with your hand), toss it on the counter, cover that with jelly and then rip the bread into crumbs and sprinkle them on top.

If someone in the world does the 2nd method it doesn't mean that the instructions themselves were indefensibly ridiculous.

It might just mean that someone screwed up trying to follow what were otherwise perfectly adequate standards.

So if you want to point to the standards themselves and explain why they are inherently bad or difficult to be implemented then we can have that discussion.

But don't point to the idiot smearing peanut butter on his walls and tell me that his actions make the instructions themselves wrong.

5 + 5 + 5 doesn't equal 15, for starters. You have to say 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3.

Please, be wrong more, I think it's delicious when you are wrong about almost literally everything.

The "problem" you are referring to is this:

http://clutchmagonline.com/2015/10/apparently-555-does-not-equal-15-heres-why/

And the issue isn't the fact that you aren't allowed to say 5 + 5 + 5 is 15. Because you can say that.

If this was an ADDITION problem and the QUESTION was 5 + 5 + 5, then the ANSWER would be 15.

But it isn't.

It's a MULTIPLICATION problem.

And the question is 5x3.

And the INSTRUCTIONS say to use the "repeated addition" strategy.

Which is taught to the kids using something like this:

https://www.homeschoolmath.net/teaching/md/multiplication-repeated-addition.php

5 x 2

Here we have five groups, and each group has two elephants.

how many groups? 5

how many in each group? 2

2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 10

Five times two elephants is ten elephants.

3 x 4

Here there are three groups, and each group has four dogs.

how many groups? 3

how many in each group? 4

We can solve it by adding:

4 + 4 + 4 = 12

Three times four dogs is twelve dogs.

So back to the problem that you were referring to... The question on the page was 5 x 3. And the kids are being taught to read 5 x 3 as FIVE groups of THREE. Not THREE groups of FIVE.

So to correctly do the problem in the way it was taught you have to add 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3.

Maybe you should go back to school...

So you are saying that 5 piles of 3 rocks is the exact same as 3 piles of 5 rocks?

Both scenarios contain the same amount of rocks, but they are not the same.

If you enter a room with 5 piles of 3 rocks each and were going to add them up you would do it with 5 sets of 3, not 3 sets of 5.

My favorite part of that second video in post 76 is when the woman goes

"Well they say it's for when they get older they'll understand more complicated versions, such as how this is 5 groups of 3...but you get the same answer, so how can it be wrong?"

Literally any math class, if the teacher says to use a method and you either don't or don't show your work, you get marked wrong.

Wrong. It's not a way of teaching.

And Ulti - ask any real engineer, and they'll tell you that methodology matters. It's the difference between life and death in many situations.

And I'm not watching the video you posted, but according to just the thumbnail, the "common core" methodology is the way people do math in their head. So it seems as though your personal example (someone doing math in their head) IS the "common core" way.

So you just actually defended common core. Good job!

I've had this exact debate with Ulti before. It ended with him admitting that Common Core standards were a good thing. It was funny because I asked him if certain things were important to have in education, and he said yes, and then I was all "you're literally just defining Common Core".

I believe his words were "even I can admit when I've been wrecked".

Those are some grade A horse shit examples.

What if one person does it quickly and wrong?
What if they do it at the exact same time because they've learnt that method from a young age and are just as adept at using it?
Your examples are so one-dimensional.

Would YOU rather have a fast solution or a slow one isn't the issue. If I can do Common core faster than you can do your method then does that mean comon core is a better method or that I'm a better mathematician.
If all the best mathematicians go into engineering and science then who the fuck is teaching them the maths they need to get there? Is that not the teacher?

Do you even realise what it is your saying?
