The vehicle had an operator behind the wheel but was in autonomous mode, according to a news release from Tempe police, meaning it was self-driving at the time.

Sounds like the operator wasn't paying attention. Uber's self-driving cars are still in data-gathering mode. They're not supposed to be operated without the operator paying close attention to what is happening. With hands on the steering wheel in order to take back manual control at any second.

People jaywalk all the time and everywhere, the vehicle should be able to react to unexpected pedestrians. Also there was a driver in the car so it's 100% on the driver for not paying attention.

Also need to consider countries who don't have stupid jaywalking laws and where pedestrians have right of way on the road. Self driving cars absolutely need to be fully aware of people at all times.

Forget that she was jaywalking, this is the real issue. That driver is going away for manslaughter.

Yeah, obviously its up to the driver to be aware of their surroundings (or the AI) and expect the unexpected, BUT if the car didn't blow a stop then it is kind of on you for not paying attention or just expecting it to slow or stop for you.

A real self driving car would detect a pedestrian and slow down. Hell, many vehicles are equip with pedestrian detection now and it automatically slows down when something is in front of them.

Uber's self driving cars are trash and they're in very early stages. Without Waymo's technology, they're stuck with off the shelf LIDAR and poor AI when it comes to object recognition. The guy should never take his eyes off of the road.

If you are riding a bike, you are a vehicle and you have to act like a vehicle. Bikers cannot be both or it will confuse drivers and cause accidents.

I almost hit a kid once because the idiot turned right and then bike onto the pedestrian crosswalk. I thought he was turning right so I made my left turn. He should have gone straight across the intersection so there was no confusion. The only time a biker is allowed on the pedestrian crosswalk is if he gets off his bike and push it across the crosswalk.

I'm sure the law varies by state and locality, but most places treat bicycles as vehicles legally speaking. I'm sure you see lots of people riding on the sidewalk, just like you see lots of people crossing the street without being at the appropriate time or place, but that is typically illegal regardless of how enforced it is

Questionmarktarius posted...

yeah and it says she crossed outside the crosswalk... like, maybe at the intersection itself

The parents were with him, so the parents should teach him before allowing him to bike alongside with cars.

Bikers need to be more educated but sadly many of them are oblivious to the rules of the road. That's a big problem for drivers if they want to share the road with cars.

I actually checked and even in places where they allow you to legally ride your bike on the sidewalk they still sometimes make it illegal to use the crosswalk on a bike at certain intersections for exactly these kind of safety reasons I assume:

a. Whenever any person is riding a bicycle upon a sidewalk, such person shall yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian and shall give audible signal before overtaking and passing such pedestrian.

b. It shall be unlawful for any person to ride a bicycle in any pedestrian crosswalk at a signal controlled intersection, adjacent to any school, or one which is under the control of the school crossing guard. At all other intersections the bicyclist shall exercise due caution before entering onto the roadway."
