I don't have any studies, I don't have any logic to back up thinking its good for people to be punished as opposed to solely being rehabilitated, but that is how I feel. I don't wanna live in a world where someone gets a slap on the wrist for taking two lives and ruining more. I'm not okay with torture or anything cruel, but I do think punishments are deserved. I do think rehabilitation should be a part of that of course, but I think jail time for the sake of punishing someone for committing a crime is a good thing. It would be different if it was an accident that happened in an instant and was unavoidable, but driving under the influence isn't something that happens only during a moment.
