...in terms of learning a new language, not "English class," who is probably going to be better at teaching it?

I'm just curious what everybody's thoughts on this are. Also, let's assume the "second language" teacher and whoever they are helping do not share a common language, but the student has enough basic understanding of English to still be taught.

On the one hand, a proficient native speaker will have a better grasp on things and won't be stumped by the any rules and all their exceptions. But on the other, the "foreign" person has already had to learn it themselves, so they might better comprehend the difficulties from their own experiences and may be able to make teaching it more relatable.

Somebody that speaks it as a first language but has learned a second language. Doesn't even necessarily have to be the language of the person/people they're teaching. A clean accent is important unless you want to end up with 'Engrish'.

I do get the sides. It could be easier to teach it if you had to learn it, too. You would probably know the best way to teach them. But I think I might have to say that someone who has it as a first language would be better. Especially if they have had to learn a second language, like Mario_VS_DK said. As you said, they would still know all the rules. And it's better if they also speak the language of the people they are teaching. That would help immensely.

I'm not entirely sure what the difference is between proficient and fluent here.

English is a goddamn terrible language, made of bits of pieces of mostly everything.
It's essentially a germanic language with latin syntax and french vocabulary, with a bunch of various nordic languages tossed in.

Britain got invaded quite a bit, over the course of history.

I just added that because some people who speak English as a first language are complete idiots. This was to cut them out.

^Nice!!!

Yeah, I thought of this topic because my uncle taught English in Japan (first language) and my grandmother helps immigrants learn it now (it's her second language, but she's been speaking it since she was a teenager).
