My girlfriend has to either pay $1000 more in insurance a year or meet her $1000 deductible before she can get the MRI she desperately needs. But we can't afford that right now, and that's just the first step.

We literally have to spend thousands of dollars to fix a simple back injury so she can live without daily pain.

America is a garbage country

But then we'd have to pay MORE than up front

the problem here is that we have to pay THOUSANDS of dollars to see the doctor. WTF kind of system is that. I feel horrible for the millions of poor people living in America who must just have to live with all kinds of terrible issues because there's no way they could ever afford this.

It's like the movie Elysium

I'd like to point out that in most countries, people are simply denied expensive diagnostic tests like MRIs without significant medical necessity, and back pain is almost always considered not emergent enough to warrant one.

Half the problem we have in the US is that we think an entitlement to healthcare means an entitlement to expensive and unnecessary tests.

We need better cost oversight, frankly.

MRIs aren't even appropriate for non-nerologic back pain. The reason her copay is so high is because the insurance company deemed it an elective test, meaning it goes against evidence based standards of care. They aren't going to pay for a test just because she wants one. This would hold true in any healthcare system, universal or not.

Back pain is usually evaluated initially with physical therapy and X-Rays. MRIs are useful for osteomyelitis and cord compression, but I suspect TCs girlfriend has neither or she'd be hospitalized.

An MRI is actually less sensitive for bone structure related pain than a standard X Ray. If nothing was found on X-Ray and she has no neurologic symptoms, an MRI is a waste of expensive medical resources.

Not necessarily. It depends on the hospital, but my wife recently had a bunch of fertility stuff done that wasn't covered by our insurance, and we're making payments interest free. We also had a bunch of bills from some other medical shit a couple years ago and that hospital let us pay interest free as well.

You need to be enrolled in a high deductible health plan to qualify.

Which based on your OP wouldn't be good since her deductible would be very high...

Hey I really appreciate this. The PT she's been seeing for six weeks said she needs an MRI, but I don't trust him since she hasn't gotten any better. I'm going to help her get someone for an Xray

Yeah an MRI is around $2000, so if she wants an MRI, which was recommended by her physical therapist, she needs to pay $1000 before insurance will cover 80% of the remaining cost. So she'd be out around $1200

The thing is you pay more in taxes but don't have a health insurance premium and deductibles and shit. So it's not like you're paying more taxes on top of current healthcare costs.

So what would be the breakdown of the tax amount vs the premiums of a private plan?
