So heres one of the biggest things I dont like about my job (working retail at a grocery store) : when youre employed here full time, you can be transferred to any store in the chain at any time. For no reason. If the higher-ups feel like being assholes, they can say we need you to work at [location that could be like two hours away].

This hasnt happened to me that yet (though I did get transferred from a location that was ten minutes from home to one thats 40 minutes away) but its something Im always worrying about.

Is this normal for retail? Or jobs in general? I know its one thing if you get like a good promotion and work at the corporate office or something but I dunno, I feel like it makes it difficult to settle if you can be moved around at any time

Not really common as it is uncommon. It really depends on the industry.

Retail, service and sales jobs almost always gets reshuffled semi-annually.

Are you management ? at my place of work you can be transferred to another place if you're management, not if your a standard low level worker.

I worked a gas station jib and if they were short staffed they'd toss me to different stores.
I even remember asking and they said it's right in your contract of employment when you take the job.

Is it common, nah. It does happen, though.

I'm not 100% sure but if you have a dead end retail job and your boss tells you to change to a store that is a 2 hour drive away, I'm pretty sure that breaks labour laws where I live unless you explicitly signed an agreement saying you'd be okay with that before you began working.

Why do you feel you have the right to insult people who work retail?

Because I worked retail for 7 years and it leads nowhere?

Only if you let it be.

Unless you're management-level, it's not realistic. Back when I worked retail for some larger chains with multiple area locations, I can't recall any non-manager switching stores except by their choice.

Honestly, there's a lot of shit in the world you could worry about, but most of it isn't terribly likely.

Given that it's at-will employment, it could legally turn into a termination if you refuse, though. Granted, if it's something infeasible -- which often is the case for low-level workers -- they often are better just getting let go so they can collect unemployment instead of quitting which (afaik anyway) wouldn't necessarily qualify somebody for unemployment.
