Axios

President Trump's proposed tariffs on imported steel and aluminum will increase U.S. employment in those sectors by 33,000 jobs, but cost 179,000 jobs in other areas of the economy, according to a new report by The Trade Partnership, a consulting firm. This isn't accounting for any potential retaliation from other countries.

So. Much. WINNING!

It would really be fantastic if Trump's Trade War convinces the GOP to finally throw him under the bus and stop protecting him.

It's not. Any company that uses steel is going to see their costs go way up and because of that people will get laid off

Its a move to strengthen, and expand steel production domestically and depend less on foreign trade by discouraging it via tariffs. There may be some growing pains but I'm ok with this. Why not keep the money here rather then pay China for steel we have the ability to produce?

We don't have the ability to produce it at lower cost.

I know for me the issue is I'm not sure how much influence his appointees have (Ross, Navarro especially) in promulgating new policies without congressional oversight

I know fuck all about how trade policies get implemented

Corporations chose to purchase it at lower rates from a foreign competitor- which is a pseudo-ally and potentially a threat to the United States. I don't see why we should strengthen their economy for short term gain.

CNN covers it well and the national review article that came out the other day largely agrees:

trump has a lot of power in this regard

but he wont use it

I don't see why we should be hurting out own economy just to hurt theirs. The whole point of trade is to benefit both parties.

Ideally, I see potential here. Create tax breaks for companies that purchase domestically until the cost of production evens out. Again, we really don't want to encourage China's economy and create further dependence on them for raw materials, especially in an industry we once dominated.

There's three things here that I find really funny. First, how readily people are willing to lap up whatever terms the media throws out there. OMG TRADE WAR!

https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?q=trade%20war

Second is how people are still unable to figure out how Trump's brainstorming process works. Remember when Trump was going to stab his supporters in the back by giving amnesty to illegal alien kids? He out maneuvered the Democrats and made them look obstructive, unreasonable and just looking for votes.

Third is how all the people getting high blood pressure over "TRADE WARS!" had no issue with Obama imposing tariffs, in fact they're probably not even aware he did.

This is the key thing. You absolutely cannot just go "lol lefties" over this when

https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/ryan-splits-with-trump-as-gop-lawmakers-move-to-block-planned-tariffs/ 2018/03/05/cbb5c786-2094-11e8-94da-ebf9d112159c_story.html?utm_term=.9a15bd91f9ea

Congressional Republicans are maneuvering to stop President Trump from levying harsh tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, arguing that the move runs counter to the core of their economic agenda and could even cause political problems heading into the 2018 midterms.

We are extremely worried about the consequences of a trade war and are urging the White House to not advance with this plan, AshLee Strong, a spokeswoman for House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.), said in a statement Monday. The new tax reform law has boosted the economy and we certainly dont want to jeopardize those gains.

Members of the House Ways and Means Committee were also circulating a letter arguing against the tariffs, and high-ranking Senate Republicans have voiced their opposition.
