Far Cry fills a niche and I already planned on pre-ordering it but their approach to how you discover side content now is so awesome looking, it really sweetened the pot. Plus new vehicles and planes... ngghhh

As long as this game isn't another lazy rehash of FC3/4/Primal/BD, I'm in.

If it's the same exact shit in a different location, I'll wait until it's $15 during a Steam sale.

Because the same game has been released 4 times already. If I'm just going to clear radio tours, liberate forts, and play icon janitor again -- just in a different settings -- the game is a lot less interesting to me. Far Cry 3 has some major gameplay flaws that made their may into the other games after it got such a great reception, and those are in real need of being fixed and refreshed.

I don't get what people who say this want.

Primal and Blood Dragon were pretty different. So if you think those were lazy rehashes I don't know what outside of a complete genre switch would make you happy.

Yeah, it's the same as Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty, it's a model that continues to work and sell for some, and not for others. I lost interest in the others I listed, but still enjoy Far Cry, although FC2 is still my favorite I think.

I'll never understand why some people give Far Cry shit for *always* being an open world first person shooter.

It'd be like giving Mario shit for always being a platformer, or Street Fighter shit for always being a fighter.

I mean maybe if it was a yearly release I'd understand, but there's usually many years between mainline far cry games, and the spin off's are so fucking off the wall that I don't know why anyone would get upset at them.

Primal used the exact same map as Far Cry 4:

https://kotaku.com/turns-out-ubisoft-used-far-cry-4s-map-to-make-far-cry-p-1762497550

The underlying gameplay mechanics in all of them have been the same, with the major differences being added vehicles or animal taming. The basics of the liberation system, map clearing, crafting, and loot collection have all been identical -- and fairly tedious.

The biggest issue with all the games is the weapon system, which makes 90% of them virtually useless. Beyond that, the open-world layout is completely squandered since there is nothing interesting for you to want to organically explore. The only reason to even visit the vast majority of the world is to clear the map of all the loot icons, and that's horrendous game design. The worlds aren't memorable and have no personality at all. Oh, and the HUD is an overcrowded mess. I'm reminded every 2 seconds that I'm playing a game, not exploring a real world.

I mean, I get sticking with a formula that works, but the Far Cry series is at the point of being rehashes now. I don't expect something as ambitious as Far Cry 2 , but I do expect more than the previous game with different textures.

Five isn't even out yet and is doing some new things, and the inclusion of full campaign co op is worth it alone.

It's actually not. They got rid of the towers and a lot of the side collectible things are more than just arbitrary collectibles, they're actually just parts of the world that help explain the history of the region. You don't climb towers now to mark shit on the map, for instance, you'll see a pamphlet for a national park in a souvenir shop or see a warning sign for dangerous cougars and the appropriate information will be marked on your map (namely... cougar hunting grounds and the location of the park). It's made to be a significantly more natural and immsersive experience than the previous games.

Even AC Origins moved away from the AC mechanics quite a bit, with a bigger emphasis on actual combat, a more role-playing-style experience, and most of the pointless ass treasure chests taken out and substituted with actual side quests with their own stories.

I think Ubisoft is getting wiser to the idea that the same tired old mechanic really does get boring.

And I'm not saying that FC5 or AC Origins are perfect titles, but they're both very strong titles (well, hopefully FC5 is, but all the released information makes it seem like it will be).

edit: Also, FC5 is going to specifically be less linear than the previous games, giving you a little more freedom to advance the story how you want to, and that will come with its own advantages and disadvantages and challenges. But I think that adds an interesting aspect to the series which traditionally didn't have that sort of freedom.
