basically the video boils down to "there's no market for anime style artists in the united states and continuing to draw anime exclusively would prevent one from being able to understand anatomy and the shapes that come from realism styles"

Is there a market for any style? The phrase "starving artist" exists for a reason

Not drawing anime and not drawing anime exclusively is a big distinction. Yes?

yes but in the video it's kinda made clear that they don't want people drawing anime period because they don't see a market for that kind of thing and that if you don't put your efforts to a more realistic style

you aren't getting a job no matter how good you are

I'm glad I had the art teacher that I had. He said it's fine to draw anime style, even though he disliked that they didn't have noses. He said it's best to draw what you like and want to draw.

Escaflowne disagrees.

Seriously though, they have noses but they're defined by the shade they cast, they're still considered for in anime, just not imprinted hard on a line-light art style.

What, and there is a market for drawing realistic humans?

Where is this market, even in the U.S.? Computer animation maybe, drawing, no.

Besides, if you're taking an art class because you expected to make a profession out of it, you're in for a rough time.

Of the artists I've seen who actually manage to make a profession out of drawing, their drawings are not based on realism.

That was a good video until she basically said she was producing a manga of her own and she hopes others in the west will do the same until a company is maid for it.... literally she is advocating for people to work on and publish anime/manga styles at the same time as telling them its not a good idea to pursue it.

There seems to be loads of people shelling out cash on Patreon for it. Granted you have to be pretty good to get that. But outside of drawing porn there isn't any room in the art world for artist. Since museum, and gallery art is just money laundering.

But there is no market for weebs drawing anime in Japan and even if you 'made it' there you can expect to make absolutely shit when it comes to pay and be burned out in six months.

And the same is true for almost everything in the creative fields, to be honest. Unless you are incredibly lucky (and not necessarily talented; see 50 Shades), if you are an actor, artist, musician, writer, etc., there is no money in your future. Get a quote-unquote real job and pay your bills, then do what you love for fun, or as a hobby. That's what I recommend (... speaking as a writer).

I know plenty of artists who draw in a variety of styles. There isn't a huge market for anything no matter how good you are or even what art college you attend. This is the same for all the arts.

Except that anime is a rising market in the US and has been since the 90s.

If crunchy, amazon netflix and hulu get off their asses and do it right anime will take over everything

So what about those animators used by Netflix for shows like RWBY?

Or the shows like Teen Titans Go?

Or Avatar the last air bender?

There is more demand than ever for artists of those styles all over. (Though it is still pretty low, though most artists of all styles struggle really)

But, wouldn't knowing how to draw hyper-idealized styles inform and reinforce realistic styles?

The anime / manga boom lasted from 1999 to 2008. Since then, it has gone back to being a niche market, and only streaming video is keeping it alive in the U.S. ... The stigma of being a fan has only increased, unfortunately.

it's why dbz and naruto are the only two anime franchises that can justify dubbing english voices for their games

What's really hilarious is you find fans on boards about Japanese made games accusing other people of being weebs.

I dunno, if there's a special derogatory word people use to make fun of a group of people, kinda makes it more mainstream.

I feel like there was a boom, then most o the fans started watching it places other than Toonami or similar blocks.
