Unless I've interacted with someone at least three times in a month I just can't commit it to memory. I've tried the trick of using the person's name three times and that helps sometimes.

I'm good at recognizing faces and my memory is great at most other things. I can remember where all the secret doors and power ups there are in a games I played 15 years ago. Is there just a limit to how many people you can keep in your head?

Too much anime and other shows sorta broke my memory for names from shows.

Same. People's names don't stick in my head unless I encounter them several times or they're important / significant to me.

Clearly, most people's names only go into the "temp file" section of my brain, and get wiped quickly. That's sensible. Why store information that you probably won't need again, or that isn't important to you?

Brain-space is finite and I'm already storing ridiculous amounts of data in my wetware, like information about the thousands of films and games that I own, song lyrics, and all sorts of other stuff that's meaningful to me. The entire map of every Castlevania game is stored up there, for example, and I can remember my way around the mazes in Adventure on the Atari 2600 to this day.

I'd rather not push any of that good stuff out just so I can memorize the names of random humans who I may never meet again :)
