I don't mean to the quality of the movie itself, but more the reveal and lead up to it. An original superhero movie coming out of nowhere with an all black cast called "Black Panther", in today's political climate, with none of it already established from any comics.

Roommate brought this up and I wasn't actually sure myself. Probably much more controversial, right? I don't think anybody is actually protesting Black Panther as it is.

Yeah, white people would not react well at all. At least older white people.

The Black Panther political party does legit scare white people. I know my mom was really worried when we drove past a "Malcom X" college in Boston when I was a kid, told us to not get out of the car.

The Black Panther comic gets away with sharing the name cause they came first. (And even then, Marvel tried several times to change the name of the character, trying stuff like Black Jaguar, because they really didn't like the association with the political movement; comic fans complained).

And the Black Panther movie does have some similar themes from the political movement. (Glorifies black self-rule, black people exercising their second amendment rights, powerful black people. Also, Oakland is where the Black Panther political party was founded). Like...all of this stuff can be waved away with "but it's in the comics; it's all coincidental", but without the existing comic IP, yeah, it would probably be seen as a promotion of the Black Panther political party and ideology.

I'd imagine people would be shocked about Marvel creating an actual new superhero IP with a massive budget. Probably a similar reaction politically.

It probably would have had a tougher time in the market; Black Panther was eased into with Civil War and his showcase was well-done. That had a bigger impact than anything else.

However, Black Panther would have probably still made a huge splash since it's hitting right at the height of a cultural movement predicated on a desire to create a more diverse Hollywood. The REAL interesting acid test would be to take a real C-lister and see how they do with a Marvel brand attached to the front of the name. Someone who hasn't appeared in a film yet and who doesn't normally have a series or two kicking around. That would be almost as good as a new character introduction. Like Black Knight just thrown into a film.

Who's the most important character introduced in the MCU with no comic equivalent before his or her introduction?

It's...a hypothetical. Doesn't really matter if it would have happened.

There is no condition under which this movie gets made without the MCU being exactly what it is.

A lot of the people who watched it probably didnt know much about him anyway. Many of these MCU movies are the publics first time learning about these Marvel heroes.

How many people had ever heard of Black Panther prior to a year ago? The fact that it's an existing property is irrelevant when it's an existing property literally nobody ever heard of or gave a shit about.

A lot of people, I would imagine. Everyone who saw Civil War, for example.

Well, if it was new comic character, it would release to critical praise and tons of internet buzz, then sell no issues and get cancelled within a year.

Since this is a MCU movie, it probably is just as successful, but generates a lot more controversy. The people who would want a hate it, who already exist and do hate it, would just be louder and more annoying without a comic book precedent. Though, that might just make it more successful.

I doubt the same movie gets made without the original comic to draw on. It would probably be a little more grounded.
