As long as they don't try to do anything too ridiculous I think it stands a decent chance of being good. It wasn't that complex of an undercover story.
Something that might work well is just to continue where the game leaves off, not trying to reinvent what it was but it could show what happens after the game or to lead into a sequel. A prequel could be fun, too, but might have been a better idea as a way to generate interest for the game, not sure how that would pan out 6 years after the fact with UFG now defunct.

The real problem is that Sleeping Dogs was basically just a game based on a plot that has already been done multiple times in existing movies. So if it's done well, it'll be just another movie in that vein and won't stand out, and if it's done poorly, everyone will dismiss it because it's a video game movie.

It doesn't seem like there's a winning scenario there.

Is this really a criticism, though? Pretty much everything under the sun can be boiled down to Shakespeare or some other centuries-old story or biblical tale. There really isnt anything original, ever. Sometimes theres clever twist on a formula, but how often do you see something truly fresh and unique?

Ill happily take that kind of problem in place of most game plots.

Oh good. Are they going to include the characters coming in for one scene and then leaving? Like all the girlfriends and the black guy? Or the part when Wei geta a drill in the leg and just walks it off in about 3 minutes? thats my best favorite part

I get that, but my point is that it's almost like someone playing The Godfather: The Game and then saying "I really enjoyed that, someone should make a movie based on it." It's not a case of the game plot being "unoriginal", as much as there are multiple films that are pretty much identical to what a Sleeping Dogs adaptation would wind up having to be. Most of its actual unique interpretations and aspects are elements that only really exist in its game mechanics.

And that works against the film, because even if its the best video game adaptation movie ever made, most people aren't really going to see it as being anything noteworthy because it's not all that unique a plot for a Hong Kong action film.

I see what you mean. Being a Hong Kong action film already makes it sort of niche, in the West at least. Hoping Yens enough of a draw to get some attention. Being in Rogue One probably helps some, but I agree that they would have to do something special if they hope to stand out in a crowded genre.
