it depends on what you play rpgs for. saga is a rather eclectic series with different design philosophies than most japanese games.

there is relatively little story or dialog and all the characters outside the first gen are all generics.

instead the focus is on gameplay with a fairly nonlinear scenario system with many quests having more than one way to go about them. most of your time will be spent in combat, and just trying to poke your way through will probably get you killed but you have a lot of options since magic, status effects, instant death, stuns, formations, etc are actually useful but it can cut both ways if you aren't careful.

you can also make things a lot more difficult for yourself if you aren't careful, the more you know the smoother your experience will probably be. also this release lets you ng+ at any point if you get stuck or frustrated and some of the other content added makes things a bit easier.

I think some of the ports have some issues though. can't really say though.

how does this work? What types of things are carried over? I'm intrigued because I've restarted Romancing Saga for PS2 so much without any benefit whatsoever.

I haven't used it yet (need to do another run for other legend), but I think items, sparked techs, and global weapon/magic experience levels carry over.
