Back in the 80s, 90s, and even early 00s he was always funny. His stand-up was coherent, relatable, and funny.

But watch any of his stand up since 2015 and it's just a lunatic old man rambling about nothing.

'WHY ARE THERE DONUT HOLES? JUST EAT A DONUT!!!"

There's not even a punchline to this joke.

Yeah he's like this completely out of touch dad that thinks every stupid thought that comes into his head is funny. And he's famous enough to go blurt them out on national TV.

"Why are you texting me TY? Just say thank you! HOW MUCH TIME ARE WE REALLY SAVING HERE?"

these jokes are terrible

Most comedians, and people really, turn into a jaded Carlin type. Very few can still make their cynicism funny like Carlin could.

He's no longer a normal person. He is extremely wealthy, and therefore, can no longer relate to the common person.

Also, since he is rich, he's not hungry anymore. There's no reason to put any effort into his stand up when there's zero threat of it effecting anything in his life.

I actually kinda like CICGC. I haven't watched every episode, but there were some I thought were really good, like the Mel Brooks one, the Barack Obama one, the Jon Stewart one.

But people in this topic are right: once you get successful as a comedian, it's hard to get back down to "the trenches" and connect with the commoners. You're now among the celebrities with celebrity friends and celebrity tastes, and basically any work you do is reflecting that, and you're just relying on your charm instead of going into the comedy club lab of finding what jokes work and what don't.

Or to put it another way, you expect the audience to come to you to see you for YOUR style of comedy, and it makes you complacent, rather than trying to adjust your act to see what *they* find funny,.

I dont think that CICGC is necessarily supposed to be a comedy show. With some of his guests it is but with others it is a discussion of the meta of comedy or stories from old heads or, like in the case of his thing with Michael Richard, doing a favor for his friend and letting him get his story out there

I saw the one with Jim Carrey and it was mostly them talking about the car. It was not particularly interesting or funny.

I get the concept and I'm sure Jerry Seinfeld has had hundreds of amazingly funny private conversations with comedians over the years, but when you bring a camera into it the whole thing goes up in smoke.

I mean comedy's so subjective anyway. Saying "I don't find *x comedian* funny" doesn't mean that they aren't funny... per capita, I guess. Clearly the successful comedians have done something right to be as popular as they are.

I dunno. I'm just happy if I can make my best friend laugh every once in a while. :)

Saw Seinfeld in person at the Beacon Theatre in NYC and he was hilarious.

He has flat out said in interviews that he's using the same material he did 20 years ago except he tweaks it to fit a more modern world. His jokes are timeless and he's a living legend.

Yeah I'm a bit young for the Seinfeld days but from what I understand wasn't he basically just a "what's the deal with airline food?" type observational comedian?

I take offense to that joke though as donut holes and donuts taste different.

Seinfeld's strongest suit was never his jokes. It was his perfect timing and pacing. His command of a bad joke turned it into a "good one" when he was performing it. I don't think he's funny, but do consider him a master of his craft from a technical standpoint.
