I was just looking at the site random acts of Pizza and saw all these hungry people asking for food, and then the people in places across the world that have any less then that. And these places are not just in 3 rd world nations but people close to us.

And it is just like damn no one any place on this vast Earth should ever be hungry.

It can be fixed, do you realize how much food grocery stores and restaurants throw out unsold food?

France has it so that food can't be thrown out but has to be donated

We throw away almost 50% of the world's banana crop every year because if don't look a certain way they won't be bought in grocery stores.

The reason stores throw out nearly expired food is because they can get sued if a homeless person gets sick from eating it.

It sucks, but that's the law for ya.

Along with this, if we ate bugs, we could tackle world hunger as well.

But for real, the amount of food that we just throw out is fucking inexcusable.

But what Mal said about the possibility of getting sued is true, which is so ridiculous.

I worked at both Petco and Kroger at one point, and both places it was "against health code and regulation" to donate anything. If we had a 40 lb bag of dog food bust on the pallet when being delivered, we couldn't donate the 39 lbs leftover that didn't spill out to local rescue efforts, we had to throw it away.

When I worked at Kroger, and we had bread, or donuts go out of date, even if it was 50+ loaves or a few dozen, we had to throw it away instead of giving it to local homeless shelters to aide in their efforts to feed the hungry within the city.

Both cases, it was due to legal issues, and the fact that whoever we gave the food to could sue us for unsanitary distribution, or distributing product that was out of date. They literally thought a homeless shelter would sue us for giving them bread that was one single day out of date, and therefore felt it was better off throwing it away so it became a non-liability.

It's really shitty, but we are also a very lawsuit-happy nation and I wouldn't put it past anyone taking advantage of the generosity for their own personal financial gain. It's a big tear between corporate america not wanting to get sued for a ton of money and the selfishness of modern society.

I see where you are coming from, and I get it entirely and feel for those suffering, but unfortunately with humans being the way they are and acting how they do, it's ruined a lot of scenarios like this.

If they produce, wash, pack, and ship bananas that won't sell, the banana farmers don't make money.

If they give away sub-par bananas, the demand for bananas that aren't free will plummet, the banana farmers don't make money.

If banana farmers don't make money from growing bananas, they will stop growing bananas.

No bananas for anyone.

To add to the grocery waste point, I worked in produce and we weren't even allowed to give away leaf trimmings from the vegetables to a well known local goat farmer.

There's literally no exceptions.

So maybe that means that capitalism isn't the most efficient system for taking care of our food problems in the world.

Ok, which other system keeps grocery stores packed with food and lifts as many people out of poverty as Capitalism?

(Hint: it's not socialism)
