wow rude

also the violin thing was whatever

Kotomi's general obliviousness to everything around her was much better in terms of humor. It takes a special kind of character to get the best of Kyou the way she did.

yeah, kotomi's spacy attitude was what was fun about her, but that's exactly my point - when you actually get into her arc, everything centers around the violin, and it saps her of her humor when she's forced to be under the limelight

I mean there's plenty more to Kotomi's arc than her being bad at the violin

once they let her do her concert thing a couple of episodes in she stops playing it altogether

Making my way through the topic. The choices for the representative pics of each game are A++.

Going to answer a question about a week too late: my favorite final bosses would be...

Earthbound
Undertale (1st route)
Undertale (last route)
Devil May Cry 3
Metal Gear Rising
Nier Automata
Mother 3
Persona 3

In no particular order. I don't think I can pick just one favorite from that list - they're all really good.

18. Metal Gear Solid (Snake5555555555)
Yl1hVtr

I didn't get into Metal Gear Solid until 2004, and the reason I know exactly when it happened is because it was the 2004 Character Battle that motivated me to try it out. That was a weird contest for me to get curious about the series considering it was probably Snake's weakest year, but it was seeing Liquid supposedly being nearly as strong as him through Frog (which turned out to be completely and totally wrong, but we wouldn't find out until later) that made me think there must be something special about this series if the hero and the villain were that strong. It turned out to be perfect timing because I was able to play through the first two games just in time for Snake Eater to come out, and I've been hooked on the series ever since.

Of course, the entire experience could have been derailed in the very first area of the game, which might be the single most difficult part in the series, especially for a first-timer to the genre like I was. I don't remember how many alerts I set off and how many times I died before I finally made it to the elevator, but it was a lot. Once I got past that part, that was when the magic began. Metal Gear Solid was way ahead of its time with its cinematic storytelling and voice acting (although the secret to the game having such good voice acting is the fact that no one's mouth moves so you don't have to worry about matching lip flaps). Even now, it's still an incredible story with all sorts of crazy twists, compelling characters, an absurd lack misunderstanding of genetics, and lots of hilarious moments and breaking of the fourth wall. I'll never forget the shock from the fallout after inserting the final PAL Key. It's one of my favorite moments in any game to this day. Metal Gear Solid also has an outstanding cast, featuring one of the coolest protagonists around in Solid Snake and one of the best villain ensembles anywhere in FOXHOUND. Snake's support staff is really good, too. I could spend tons of time just messing around in the Codec menus talking to them all.

As far as the gameplay goes, I'm not particularly good at stealth-based games! I get caught frequently and die often whenever I play Metal Gear Solid. That's probably part of the reason I love the boss fights so much because I don't have to worry about being sneaky! The most famous boss in the game is undoubtedly the Psycho Mantis fight, where you have to switch the controller ports to beat him after you get wowed by the fact that he can tell what games you've been playing. Kojima is just so good at interacting with and messing with the player. There's one thing in particular in Metal Gear Solid that threw me for a loop, and that was finding Meryl's Codec frequency. When it talked about it being on the back of the case, I honestly couldn't have conceived that they meant the literal game case, so I spent a long time looking all over for a case in the game until I remembered seeing a frequency on the back of the game case and wondering if it was the right one. It almost felt like I was cheating at the time!

I suppose I should talk briefly about the Twin Snakes remake, which I actually like! I know some people don't like the Matrix-esque cutscenes or the fact that inserting Metal Gear Solid 2's gameplay elements makes it too easy. I don't mind the gameplay changes because, as I've already said, Metal Gear Solid 2 is super fun to play, and I still died a lot anyway, so whatever. I can handwave the over the top cutscenes away as non-canon fanservice and enjoy them for what they are. I have a lot of fun playing both versions of the game.

Bonus Question: Have you played a game because of a GameFAQs contest?

Another game many people were way off on, but AxemRedRanger and pjbasis only missed by one spot!

I was one of the early adopters of both Phoenix Wright and Nier. I bought AA1 on Day 1 and proceeded to hype it after finishing. Nier I didn't get right away, but I picked it not too long afterwards and I think I was actually the very first person to start hyping it on B8. There was one specific topic where I ranked games that people posted (basically this topic series in real time) and I distinctly remember Leon saying "rank Nier, because it's obvious that this is the one you really want to talk about". Was guilty as charged.

17. Sonic Generations (Johnbobb)
vWtQ5vV

As someone who's been a Sonic fan since the very first game, the transition from 2-D to 3-D was a little bumpy at first and gradually became rockier until the series hit rock bottom with Sonic 2006. There was a part of me that retained the belief that one day Sonic would reclaim its former glory and finally break the infamous Sonic Cycle. Unleashed was a step in the right direction with the Daytime stages, although it still tethered itself to bad concepts with all the Werehog junk. Colors was a major validation for me, and Generations was my reward for my enduring faithfulness. It was a tribute to all the longsuffering Sonic fans who had stayed with the series through the good times and the bad times.

For all intents and purposes, Sonic Generations is a throwback game fueled by nostalgia (but that's not to say only a long time fan could enjoy it). It has virtually no unique assets other than the last boss fight. It's extremely light on story, but I did like the concept of having two different Sonics, two different Tails, and two different Robotniks on screen at the same time. It made for some pretty funny interactions between them featuring some clever nods that a knowledgeable fan would easily pick up on and appreciate. Sonic Generations isn't a big game either. They remake a 2-D and 3-D version of a stage from each of the mainline games, and they even throw in a few classic boss fights from previous games. The stage music is remixed, too (although Generations has a cool option where you can choose to play a wide variety of songs on any given stage instead of the default one). All in all, that's only nine stages (each with a 2-D and 3-D version) and four boss fights, counting the final boss. As an aside, I'm honestly kind of disappointed Sega never did any real DLC for this game because I'd have eaten that up if they just kept remaking old stages. The game does have a multitude of side missions to pad the total runtime, but while they can be fun, that's not why you're here. You're here to replay reimagined classic and modern levels.

That being said, the game couldn't just get by on fanservice alone. The gameplay and level design actually had to be good, and thankfully, it was. The Classic Sonic levels are 2-D sidescrolling, momentum-based platforming with multiple routes through each zone just like the Genesis games. The Modern Sonic levels are similar to the Unleashed Daytime and Sonic Colors stages, with a fixed camera that's usually behind him and a focus on building speed via the Boost Gauge, which requires quick reaction times. Both styles are thrilling in their own ways, and they're super fun to play and replay to watch yourself get better. Adding to the replay value was the fact that Sega brought back the Red Star Rings from Sonic Colors. Five of them are placed in each stage, and it encourages you to explore and go out of your way to find new routes in order to get them all. Sonic Generations isn't my favorite game in the series (That title still belongs to Sonic 3 & Knuckles), but it definitely has a firm hold on second place at the moment.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite platforming series?

Most people were pretty close on this one, with Janus and lhg both only being one away!

I completely disagree

Generations got the nostalgia points from both the 2D and 3D eras, and on top of that was a perfect example of how both styles can work

Mania had plenty of nostalgia going for it, and while it was fun, it also held too strongly to the "only the old games were good" attitude, and refused to recognize and fix the issues the series had that have since been mostly fixed (sending you back multiple levels on a loss, main story progress halted by one-off minigames)

16. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (Dragon66116)
V9frDga

Starting the story in media res is a fairly common technique in many games, but I feel like few have done it as effectively as Uncharted 2, where you have Nathan Drake hanging from the back of a train that's dangling off of a cliff (as seen in the image above). The entire time you're playing this game, that moment is in the back of your mind, and you absolutely cannot wait to get there to figure out how exactly he got into that situation and how he's going to get out of it. Now it was a tough decision for me about which Uncharted game is my favorite, but I went with this one because I think it has the best setpieces in the series. Borneo is fantastic all the way through, and the train sequence is what the game builds up to, as I mentioned before. The resolution to that part of the game is just amazing.

I believe Uncharted 2's greatest strength may be its pacing. When it's time for action, it goes all in and it's super intense, but they also know when to pull back a bit and give you a breather. The one segment in particular that comes to mind is Nate just taking a leisurely stroll through the small village in Nepal in between two high tension action sequences. The dialogue and the character interaction have always been a strength of the series from the beginning, and it's great here, of course. The introduction of Chloe Frazer as Nate's new love interest was a pretty surprising move to me because it seemed like they went all in with Elena in the first game, and now she was nowhere to be found. As an aside, I'm kind of bummed that all of their relationship troubles happen offscreen, and they never really discuss them that much during the games. It was great when the two of them finally meet, and she introduces herself as, "Elena Fisher, last year's model." Flynn is an unlikable punk, but I think that's what he's supposed to be. I actually kind of like Lazarevic, even if he is stereotypically evil. For some reason, I'll find myself randomly shouting, "Draaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaake!" the way that he does from time to time. Regardless, Nate is such a good character and a great talker that he can work well with anybody, even Tenzin, who doesn't even speak English. The only real issue is the distinct lack of Sully, who largely disappears after the opening act of the game.

Now the first Uncharted was kind of rough (which seemed to be pretty typical for most series that started in the PS3/Xbox 360 generation for whatever the reason), particularly when it came to combat. The enemies were bullet sponges, and I just dreaded every time I got into a firefight. Uncharted 2 was a big step up in that department. It's still not something I look forward to doing, but at least it's manageable now. They made melee a lot more viable (complete with Nate talking smack to enemies as he takes them down, which is awesome), and it didn't take forever to win firefights. The appeal of the series will always be the setpieces and the parkour though. That's what you're here for (and the banter), so the best thing they can do is make it as painless as possible to get from one to the next. Uncharted 2 was a move in the right direction. I'm not sure if it's the biggest leap up in quality from the first game to the second (as I said, a lot of PS3/Xbox 360 series are in contention here), but it's pretty close.

15. Mass Effect 2 (WalkingWiki)
gatvW5p

Now I am generally not a fan of WRPGs or space opera, but I happen to have a good friend who is. My arrival at Mass Effect fandom took a rather roundabout route. Since the series was only available on Xbox 360 for the first few years, I had no access to it. User SaveEstelle had even discussed purchasing the console for me just so I could play Mass Effect (and Tales of Vesperia, too, which I guess I'll never get to play at this point). Eventually, BioWare released Mass Effect 2 on Playstation 3. I was rather conflicted about jumping into the series without playing the first game, especially one like this where your decisions carry over. As such, I ended up watching an LP of the first game before starting Mass Effect 2. Fortunately, BioWare added a poorly animated comic with this version that let you make the most impactful decisions from the first game, which was very helpful because apparently, the default in Mass Effect 2 without a previous save file includes Wrex not being in the game. Having to settle for Wreav instead could've potentially been disastrous.

Anyway, after I finished the game, my initial thought was that it was a pretty fun game, but I didn't feel like it would be a series I could find myself getting hooked on or anything. How wrong I was. Before long, there was this thought in the back of my head that I should go back and play the game again as a Renegade (since I did a Paragon run the first time) just to see how things changed. The next thing I knew, I had completed a Paragon run, a Renegade run, and even a neutral run where I tried to pick the middle option as much as possible (which was probably the most drastically different since you eliminate your ability to resolve many situations successfully, so a lot of NPCs ended up dead on that playthrough). I can't even explain how it happened! I suppose a large part of it is that Commander Shepard is a great character regardless of which way you lean with him. He just gets the job done, regardless of how he has to do it. I'm also drawn to the magnetic hero archetype (fittingly enough) since Shepard finds a way to work with and win over all different types of people, and they all eventually become so loyal to him that they follow him on a suicide mission.

Speaking of which, the Loyalty Missions might be the best part of Mass Effect 2. I'm big on character development and having dedicated arcs to them, and you get them for every single squadmate in the game. It kind of reminds me of the World of Ruin in Final Fantasy VI in that way. I liked the fact that they all felt different instead of just being copy/paste missions. My personal favorites were Tali's, Mordin's, and Kasumi's, but they were all generally enjoyable. Part of the fun was that Mass Effect 2 had such a large squad, so there was always plenty of content to go around. The best squadmates in this game were Thane, Tali, Miranda, and Garrus. I had a particular fascination with Thane because I enjoyed the complex facets of his character, with him being a terminally ill assassin with a deeply spiritual side and a broken family. Plus, I really liked his lapses into perfect descriptions of past events in his life. He was super cool and had a great design.

I guess I should talk about the gameplay at least a little bit. I'm normally not a fan of shooters, but having biotic powers and things like that made it a lot more enjoyable so it wasn't just straight up shooting stuff with guns. The final mission was so much fun. It might be my favorite mission in the series. Mass Effect 2 also had some excellent DLC, with Lair of the Shadow Broker being the best of them. It's just a great all around game.

Bonus Question: Who is your favorite Mass Effect squadmate?

Another game many people missed by a lot (although some had ME3 here), but Shonen_Bat and AxemRedRanger only missed by one!
