Its an exaggerated issue because many gay apps like Grindr are used fucking so people list their preferences pretty specifically to not waste time. On sites like OkCupid I dont see it often.

Basically gay male culture in general.

A lot of us prioritize two major things when looking for partners:
-do we find them attractive and bearable to be with?
-are they ready to fuck and decent at it?

The latter part is because we're men; it's totally because we're a mass of sexually liberating horny men. You trot down to a gay male community and claim you're looking for a sex-negative relationship with a gay man, you will be laughed at. And for good reason. Because you're on the hunt for a dog that acts like a parakeet. Biological men in general crave sex for multiple reasons. And that often gets amplified between gay men (because it's man + man).

So naturally sex appeal is a huge factor in attracting partners in gay male culture, because damn near all of us consider sexual compatibility as a cornerstone of our intimate relationships. And it's a sensible priority because our best relationships are going to make us constantly horny. Popping a boner isn't just a common reaction from us seeing a hottie; it's also how our bodies inform our intimate partner "hey, we're comfortable with this arrangement ".

However, a big issue with sexual compatibility being such a big deal with gay men is that the little details can turn us off...and that's it. On to the next guy who doesn't have those details, because that's who your dick really wants. It's shallow, it's superficial, it's nature. You typically can't rewire that. You can't command your dick to accept guys of Type A when guys of Type B are what really make it explode.

And, unfortunately, one of the potential details is race/ethnic groups. Despite there being gay men from all racial demographics, many of us still casually discriminate over what groups of men we're willing to date. And there's not really any practical solution for that. Telling a gay black dude who's horny for Latino booty that he needs to have more sex with Asians is rarely going to have any success. His penis is what casts the final verdict on his attractions; no amount of political messages or social justice education is going to change that.

Yes, I'm well aware of the noticeable favoritism of white men in western gay culture too. I'm not sure how else to put this besides: the mob has spoken. I mean you can try to encourage fellow gay men to try dating more minority men, but don't hold your breath for trends to change. Ironically a ton of minority men are also eager to get with white partners. That adds to the favoritism of white gay men and the comparative lack of it for minority men. There's no productive solution for any of this, people have tried. One awkward attempt I witnessed at a club amounted to telling minority gays to "date their own kind". And what does that sound like....?

It's more accurate to say gay men can also be racist and that ANY race group can demonstrate it in their dating opinions. There's plenty of gay asian men who flat out say no black guys in profiles. And vice versa. There's latino men who say white guys only. Attractive white guys kind of have the largest selection to choose from in America and of course a bunch of them have certain races they veto too.

As triggering as that all is to see, how could it be fixed so that all race groups get near equal chances to be considered for gay dating?

Let me rephrase that: how could you convince all races of gay men to be willing to be more diverse in their dating selection without resorting to shame tactics that pressure them not to exercise their human right to date who they really want?

If you can find a sound solution that doesn't step on the rights of gay men, yet also promotes recognition of attractiveness of all groups of men, you deserve a Nobel Prize.
