Fax machines have all but disappeared in most industries, but continue to thrive in health care.

Part of the reason is tradition, as many older doctors simply feel comfortable with the technology and refuse to let it go.

It's also considered safe and secure under today's privacy laws. HIPAA, the federal regulations that govern how patient health records are shared, specifically state that fax machines or mail are acceptable methods for doctors to transmit a medical record.

Health care has also been slower to digitize than other sectors.

Until recently, most patient medical records were stored on paper. It took a huge investment of federal dollars to incentivize doctors to adopt digital systems, known as electronic medical records. But it remains a challenge for doctors to share patient information, especially with hospitals that use a different electronic medical record vendor.

I can see that. There's no guarantee that the person receiving the fax on the other end has anything to do with the patient's care.

If they've never used one then obviously they're not going to know how. Fax machines are becoming increasingly rare these days because they are mostly obsolete. I imagine a bunch of these people have never used a rotary phone or dial-up internet either

Actually the only reason fax is still used by insurance and doctors is because, sadly, it's still the most secure way of getting patient info around. It's far more secure than email, or more specifically SMTP. If it weren't for those two industries faxing would be long dead.

1st one is fun, you get to dial back the button while the spinning thing goes back into place while inputting the number.

When I was doing my student training as a nurse, we had to do both digital record keeping and paper file keeping as were so many older doctors who couldn't use the newer ways. Was fucking awful.

I'm more concerned about the old doctors who are technologically illiterate and don't want to learn than I am about young doctors who need 5 or 10 minutes to be shown how a fax machine works.

Faxes are mostly used in medical and legal work and never in real life. It makes sense that your average person isn't gonna know how to use one. It's no longer a basic necessary skill, even in an office setting.

Hospitals are absolutely terrible with technology because doctors think they're above everyone and refuse to learn anything new in terms of technology. Most people would be blown away by how archaic some of these "systems" are.

Paper records everywhere, absolutely no collection and sharing of important medical data, nothing.

The bigger concern is why is the medical industry so far behind the times? NOBODY should be using fax machines anymore outside of scanning something to email.

Don't need a phone line to scan something to email. It should be a dead technology period.

Yeah, remember being told we shouldn't do it ever, even when asked.

I use a fax machine all the time at work. It's the primary mode of communication for warranty and insurance companies. Some fleet companies have transitioned over to all-online processes, but when that fails or you have to do manual authorization it's going to involve a fax or two.

I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm just preempting the "millennials don't have basic life skills" argument this could lead to.
