Like Big Bang Theory

I know people wouldn't literally be laughing at all the jokes but are there still people there?

In the past they were, these days it's Scooby Doo 60's canned laughter which is why people hate it.

If they are, the audience is likely paid to fake laugh.

Some shows are filmed in front of a live audience, but the laugh track you hear in the broadcast is that, a track.

Most shows with audience laughing are filmed in front of an actual audience. You can tell because the laughing sounds slightly different each time. Sometimes shows do "sweeten" the laugh track by dubbing over audio to make it sound like more people are laughing but usually if you hear laughter in a sitcom somebody was actually laughing.

People probably are literally laughing at the jokes.

A lot of jokes that may seem unfunny to you may land with other people. Also whenever a large number of people are watching live comedy it creates an atmosphere where everybody laughs more easily.

i don't understand those "studio audience" shows, where the joke is based on camera angles.

like, a thing is happening off screen, the character sees it, the camera pans over to it, and then the laugh starts.
like, what the fuck are they doing there?
