Hey, people who would be in the know...

I've been watching a bunch of speedruns this week, and now I really want to play Mario 64 again. I'm resisting the urge to just impulse buy at the nearest store. What's a reasonable price, assuming I'm not bargain hunting on e-bay? I figure at the least I'll want the console, SM64, and a controller. If I'm going in for that much, I'd probably also want a second controller and MK64.

GameStop looks to have the console for 80, controllers for 20, and SM64 for 40. (MK64 is 60, yikes.) There's a small chain that I'd probably check out first that I know has had the items in stock in the past, and I probably could just snap buy, but they don't have prices online. Am I likely to do much better than GameStop, though? (With reasonable expectation that the equipment works.)

Those prices seem pretty reasonable. Mario games in particular (at least major ones) seem to maintain value on reseller markets due to the lack of actual resellers.

You should shop around for better prices. The system and the two games you can almost certainly get better prices elsewhere. Controllers are iffy. I would try eBay first. Make sure the listings have pictures to ensure good condition. And don't be afraid to ask the seller for other pictures if you need to see a particular angle.

Smaller chains are fun to walk in and look around, but their prices can be really high. So if you go in one of those, be careful.

So after checking the stores and not being satisfied, I remembered today that emulators exist. Man, some of those stars on the second floor suck. Not looking forward to getting to top.

A console + cables and 1 controller seems to go for $60, give or take $10, assuming you're not picky about colors. Mario 64 is a $25-$30 game loose. Mario Kart is more like $35-$40, and a second controller will probably run you $18-$25.

So the total package would run you $128 on the low end, $165 on the high end. And GameStop is asking $220? Yeah don't buy that.
