Targeted a young audience at first, while gradually moving toward a more mature audience later on?

Like imagine...

Entry 1: Very much for children, around 12+. The story is whimsical and fun, nothing really dark aside from some possible hinting.

Entry 2: Coming out some time after the first. Targeting teens as its main demographic.

Entry 3: Young adults.

Entry 4: Targeting adults.

And the characters get older and mature right along with the audience and storytelling.

The only series I can think of is...Maybe Harry Potter? I never read/saw the later entries but they seemed to get darker as they went.

Came in here to say Harry Potter.

It's not like they became totally adult books at the end, but they were far darker and had more stern storylines. The first books were clearly written for younger children, almost had a Disney kind of feel to them, but by the last book there was way more death, torture, dealing with depression, swearing, drugs, things like that.

The comic Cerebus started off as a Conan the Barbarian parody and quickly became incredibly complex, not exactly the same thing, but it's kinda similar.

South Park

when it started airing i was like 12 or 13 and the level of humor was perfect for me. as i matured, so did the show and by the time i was in college it was tackling social issues and current events.

It's one of those weird series that towards the end it became less about the story and more the author's soapbox for some crazy ass beliefs. I still enjoyed it but the author had some real bad issues with women that makes it hard to read later on.
