when i think rich i think of some dude with a mansion and sports cars,

Obviously a 100k salary alone will not get you this. No one thinks that. My parents have a net worth of around a couple million and even we don't live like that.

exactly. there is a stark difference between being upper middle class and wealthy/rich

I don't really understand what point you're trying to make. That $100k doesn't make you the ultra-elite rich? Okay.

So TC, you live in bumfuck Mississippi with a $150k-$250k/year salary it seems and you don't consider yourself rich?

There's so many levels to rich, I'm not sure what your point is. You're rich. Even $100k is rich.

But it's not filthy rich. It's not "fuck you money" rich. That's a very small subset of society.

i am not rich. if i can maintain this income level for a long time while saving i could maybe one day be rich, but that i can't retire or suddenly stop working

also i don't have a salary, i run a business and my income varies depending on how much i make

Rich means different things to different people. I have enough money that I don't really have any worries in life. Rich enough I suppose.

eye of the beholder and all that is true i s'pose. 10 years ago when i was working a shit job for 9-10 dollars an hour i guess i would have thought i was rich now but being objectively rich is different imo

You're in the 90th percentile or higher for HOUSEHOLD income in Mississippi as an individual.

I think you're letting being rich be defined too much by how much hard cash you have this second. There are very few salaries where people could just retire after getting it for five years.

there is a difference between living comfortable with some luxury and being rich, if i stopped working today i don't have enough in savings to maintain my lifestyle for any significant period of time.

I think you're again throwing around weasel words again to try to downplay your financial status. What does "some luxury" mean? What luxuries are you lacking that you think would make the difference between you being rich versus just living comfortably?

the main thing is being able to retire and live the rest of your life while maintaining the same standard of living imo. to me, in order to be rich you should be able to retire and still afford the same standard of living as while working. i know my income is well above average in my state and nationally, i just don't feel rich or even close. i can't go buy a ferrari or a home in the hamptons. i know that isn't the only qualifier but being middle to upper middle class and being wealthy are two things that are fairly far apart
