Nier Automata has sold an additional 200k copies on Steam since its price cut two weeks ago. I will never not be weirded out by it being semi-mainstream (and existing at all). This is the the sequel to that obscure poorly-reviewed RPG I was trying to sell years ago!

End Is Nigh is a lot like Celeste or Super Meat Boy but not as good (unless maybe you're really hardcore and thought SMB was too easy)

I had a lot of fun going over The End is Nigh during the holidays, but also kinda wished I hadn't played it then because Celeste came out a month later and was more aesthetically pleasing. Haven't played the latest Shantae game (and I Kickstarted it!) but heard its pretty middling. Bleed 2 is the pick of the bunch.

I preordered Nintendo Labo tape.

On one hand, I really want to 100% Planet Robobot like I did Triple Deluxe.

On the other hand, the thought of beating my head against True Arena until I master all those bosses is completely not appealing (and thats all I have left).

Maybe Ill take a break and play PW:JFA and then come back to Kirby.

The best part about Kirby games is beating the True Arena. Half the entire game is figuring out the boss attack patterns and trying to overcome it.

I also see that Sega has decided to put their Genesis classics on everything but the Switch. I see how it is, Sega. This is because I skipped a couple of Yakuza games.

Does Sega have much announced for the Switch? I think VC4 is coming.

I'm really fascinated about which Japanese devs have jumped on board. You have small companies like Nippon Ichi going all in, though I think that's a necessity because the Vita is practically dead.

I've seen people suggest the whole Michael Jackson music thing as an impediment, but it's been released enough times with all that stuff intact that it's clearly not. You can buy it on Steam right now. If I remember right on Wii Virtual Console the two games were sold separately but were able to detect each other on your system to let you do the lock-on stuff. I think even the Sonic 1 and 2 lock-ons worked there.

Regardless of those two releases you're absolutely correct that they rarely get it right. They still never let Taxman work his magic on it, either.

Setsuna for $20 sounds nice. Lost Sphear, from what I played as a demo, wasnt super engaging. I feel like those Tokyo RPG Factory games are missing a key ingredient that makes them more than just a callback.

Octopath Traveler looks like the real deal, though!

oh you know what, Bleed and Enter the Gungeon are $20 combined, much better use of that specific amount of money.

Gungeon is an excellent roguelike. My favourite after Spelunky, Isaac, and Unexplored.

Don't think Bleed 2 is on sale so it's $9 for the first game then whatever they're charging for the second.

I wonder if it's the best-selling Xbox game. It has to be up there.

Looking at the numbers - in about a year, PUBG has sold 30 million copies. After a year, League of Legends had 32.5 signups. So not way faster, but at about the same rate, which is still really high. It's also about the same pace that Overwatch has grown.

League still crushes the other in concurrent/total monthly players, but if Overwatch/PUBG/Fortnite continue to grow as they have, it will face stiff competition. At some point these games are going to cannibalize each other. They're kind of already starting to! PUBG's growth has slowed down after Fortnite blew up, for obvious reasons.

I'm kinda curious about League. The Dota 2 community has been shrinking over the last year or so. Riot seem better about community management and player retention, and have like 10x the players that Dota has, but I'd be curious to see what their numbers look like over time. I bet they're quicker to respond to any dips in player count than Valve.

Hmm yeah, article I looked at was only counting steamspy for PUBG.

League has consistently grown over the years. The last released numbers were back in mid-2017, which pegged it at around 100 million monthly players and god knows how many total downloads. However, I can't find any numbers since then, I wouldn't be surprised if the numbers shrunk a little due to the continued growth of Overwatch/PUBG/Fortnite.

I don't think PUBG/Fortnite will do that much damage overall though, their fanbases don't overlap very much with LoL's due to the genre difference. Overwatch is closer due to the anime aesthetic and the more class-oriented gameplay, but it's still an FPS as well.

yeah I'm not saying League isn't still the biggest game on the planet, I just want to know the scale of that beast

when PUBG was blowing up last year it wasn't stealing from anything observable because people were making Steam accounts to play it, and they were largely from China, which to me suggests it actually was pulling from League and Overwatch. who knows to what degree. Fortnite just seems to be from everywhere though. it helps that it's free, on everything, and has a cartoony look that appeals to younger people.
