Why should an Australian pay 100 Australian dollars for a game when he can buy it for 60 American dollars instead?

Why can't a European region resident watch American Netflix and all the shows/movies pertaining to it?

I can't believe none of the Brazilians, UKians, and Swedish on this board are bothered by this

Region locking is stupid, yeah.

But Australians don't actually pay more for games when you adjust.

I think the whole point of region locking is to make products more favorable for the specific regions instead of something costing $60 US in a country where people make $600 a month on average.

I live in a country where piracy is rampant so modchipped consoles are a thing, and that kills every region lock. So in that way it hasn't bothered me game wise.

But the anime selection of Crunchyroll for this country is extremely poor compared to that of the US. And Funimation isn't even available here.

Never personally used Netflix or other TV/Movies streaming service.

region locking is designed just to help the companies, not us. the whole point of it is just to control their releases. a country that doesn't officially have a release yet but still has the product being sold, means unofficial sales where the profit doesn't go to the makers of the game.

Aussies paying high prices for games isn't really region locking though.

Yeah pretty much, like how amazon instant video is just available in the US and possibly Canada. So even if I did want to buy a show to watch on instant video I wouldn't be able to because I'm not currently in the US. It's kinda bs.

If there were more demand for the shows for the licensing costs then maybe it would be available. You can also blame foreign laws regarding licensing, refunds, etc. for the lack of availability of certain things that are based in the US...

I do want to learn the history of region locking now that you mention it, stuff like how it all started, who was the first blaggard who proposed it and what went on from there, etc.

Unfair and pure bullshit, If your show, movie or game isn't available here then you give me no other option than to find a legally grey method to watch it or at worst pirate it, bring it over here and I'll gladly pay to watch/play it.

I mean for video games it basically started because a single global video game market meant that games were either being sold at a single price point without factoring in regional economies, or they were being sold at multiple price points factoring in regional economies but then that meant that people in a more expensive area could just buy from a cheaper area.

So in a way it benefits both the company and the customer.

No, it does not. In no way does it make games cheaper for consumers
