"Too Awesome to Use" is a video game trope about single use items that are amazing, but end up being so good that they never get used and sit in your inventory until you've beaten the game. Most common examples are things like Megalixirs from Final Fantasy games or Ethereal (breakable) weapons in Diablo 2.

But what are some others? What's the "most awesome to use" item you never seem to use in a video game?

This. I had to horde it all when I was younger. Especially bad at it with ammo for the badass weapons in shooters. It made me better at them in the long run though, relying on weaker weapons to take down endgame enemies. Only at bosses would I finally just let loose with the heavy ordnance.

Modern shooters, especially when you have just 2-3 weapons instead of an armory in your pocket, broke the habit, as they tend to give you the heavy ordnance right when it's needed.

In a game called MAG on the PS3, the light machine guns were so incredibly overpowered it was nuts. They had the fire rate of a carbine, the range of a sniper rifle, and the damage of a shotgun, with minimal recoil considering everything.

It was easy mode.

I wasn't a fan of them for reasons I cannot remember, and mostly used shotguns and pistols in groups of 3-5 with friends. The maps were huge, and we'd take non-travelled routes to objectives. Its the only game I remember being realistic with shotguns, as they actually had a range greater than 12 feet.

The developer eventually caved and nerfed LMGs, and along with them went half the playerbase.

Too many.

If, for example, there are five tiers of health potions in a game, I'm the kind of guy who would still be getting on with the worst two tiers at endgame and hoarding the upper three. Probably would use the third tier for the first time at the final boss.

"But, D_R, even the best tier health potion can be bought at shops! Just use your money to hoard them and use them!"
"Yeah, but the healing ratio is 1:2:4:6:10 while the prices are 1:3:10:20:50! Not worth the money! I'd rather buy more special weapons(most of which I wouldn't be using either lol) instead!"

The Rocket Launcher in RE5. I know I could get more ammo for it, but I was always afraid I wouldn't have the ammo when I needed it.

Also, since master ball was covered, I'll add a Max Elixir in Pokemon games. I always saved those for Elite 4, then rarely ended up actually using them.

The backup item in Super Mario 3D World, regardless of what it is. If I lose my item, I usually end up finding a new power up box before remembering to activate the one I have on standby.

E tanks in Megaman (at least 2), I only use them if I'm in absolute need for health, and pp items (aside from leppa berries if you can grow them) in pokmon games, and berries in the gen v games, since the only way to grow them (dream world) got taken down in 2014, maybe psi moves in earthbound in places you know there is a boss (I usually end up spamming my most powerful attacks at the bosses)

I will also add Hypermode in Metroid Prime 3. That mode was OP as heck and made the game feel too easy whenever I turned it on. The fact that you barely lost an energy tank for using it was a small price to pay for the amount of damage you dished out.

Another reason I don't like to use these type of items is because there's no reason to be OP in some circumstances if I can win without them. Also no point in making a fight easy mode when I'm probably overleveled anyway. There are certain exceptions though.

When we are able to retry fights as many times as we want, it's usually not difficult to find the winning strategy eventually if it's possible.

BTW did anyone else find it weird in FF4 Advabce in the secret dungeon when that dude places the Megalixir on the grave and is all like "may it protect you in the next life like it did in this one"? I'm like... how did it protect him if he didn't use it..?

tied to the related feeling where you never want to spend more than X amount on healing items, where X doesn't change throughout the game even as your money stockpile ends up 100x what it was at the start

But it is worth it in cases where you get to use one item per turn in battle. At that point, you're paying for better HP restoration per round. Those low-end potions restoring 30 HP aren't going to cut it when bosses are popping for for 1,000 damage a round. Outside of battle, however, you're right. Use the cheap stuff.

Also, I find most RPGs (especially all the FF ones) have such poorly balanced currency that you finish with far more than you could spend maxing out multiple inventory screens. May as well spend it on the higher priced healing items.
