there are things to like about FF6, but if you actually play it it hasn't aged that well at all IMO. in particular, the characters have very shallow development. the gameplay's not that great either.

it was mind-blowing for its time, but it doesn't really hold up today. it could use a complete redesign.

Well, it's imbalanced. The core characters are very well developed, but some of the extras are like "mehhh, let's kill Hidon"

The gameplay is great though, albeit... easy. very easy. It's probably the easiest RPG in existence... it's not unreasonable to beat the game just holding the A button. But it does have its fair share of tactical bosses (ultros / Air Base / MagiMaster).

very well developed? I feel like they're more defined by their appearance and name than by any actual character development. they're all basically their sprites, name, and a few one-dimensional properties. even kefka.

I'm going through the entire series and getting 100% in each one. I'm only on Dirge of Cerberus, but I've played 9, 10, 12 and 13 in the past, so I've played most of them at this point. Honestly, I thought FFVI was pretty mediocre. I think a lot of people had a great experience as a kid with it, but frankly it's a really rough game. The story is sometimes great, which are the parts people remember, and oftentimes just total garbage. People seem to often look past the total nonsensical parts of the story because of nostalgia. So many systems in the game are just... not done or completely unbalanced. They had a lot of ambition and ran out of time or funding or something. Sketch is largely junk and Rage is a hot mess. There's so much more, but I don't feel like ranting that much right now.

What really gets me is that this screwed up game that everyone praises constantly came out AFTER FFV. FFVI really felt like 1 step forward, 3 steps back compared to FFV, people really need to give that game a chance. I know, no childhood attached to it, I get it, but it's still a great game.

That's what I'm saying. Despite it not coming out during their childhood, they should still give it a go. My first sentence there is me complaining about Square doing a worse job with the sequel than the previous game.

but they didn't
stat building was pre determined by classes in the previous games
most of your characters didn't have their own story
maybe ffv is better than ffvi action wise but all of the systems in ff6 and mario rpg legend of the seven stars are in ff7! not ffv or ff2 or dw2 and 3 or ff3

Its my favorite too. But this is Final Fantasy we're talking about. So when you say something is your favorite, you're saying "I love this great game slightly more than I love the rest of these great games."

Edit: Except Final Fantasy 2 (NES) which was terrible.

I actually thought about this, and saw a pattern.

1: Class System
2: No Class System.
3: Class System
4. No Class System
5: Class system
6: No class system.

So you are partially right, in a way.

It had a PS1 port first. Granted the localization was questionable. If I recall that is the one where "wyvern" got mistakenly changed to "Y-Burn."

1: Class System
2: No Class System.
3: Class System
4. No Class System
5: Class system
6: No class system.

So you are partially right, in a way.

That's true about the class system, but that's not really what I meant. The class system is just a design choice. I mean really basic stuff like NPCs moving out of the way. In 5, you push against an NPC and its next move will be greatly sped up. Also, you can partially occupy the same square as the NPC momentarily in order to get past. I was really happy about this coming from 4. However, 6 was even worse than 4 in regards to this. NPCs are immovable walls in 6 and you just have to hope that they will eventually get out of your way and many of them move at the speed of molasses.

Also, towns are a pain to navigate. This is partially because of the stupid NPCs, but just going back in town and getting to shops or the inns was just annoying. No straight lines almost anywhere. You might say this adds to the atmosphere or realism or something, but frankly dodging 20 things every time I want to go to a shop or talk to someone specific was not fun.

These might sound like nitpicks, but 6 has these missteps all over the place in so many different regards. Meanwhile, 5 has most of this all figured out. It's like Square thought "you know, we've been improving the small things over the years, but this is too good at this point. Let's reverse all of it."
