What is the rarest possible item drop that has a confirmed drop rate?

Even better if it is something people wanted to farm.

Came here to post this.
PSO had some laughable drop rates, first you'd need a rare enemy, then you'd have like 1 in 280,000 chance of it dropping something.

Rare enemy hunts are laughable because people are really terrible at probability. I recall the "rare enemy rate" being 1/512, ok that's not so terrible right? Ok, now the item will only drop 1/2 of the time you kill that rare enemy. So the real drop rate of that item is 1/1024, still not TERRIBLE right? The problem is, there might only be 30 of that creature in the "optimal" quest for hunting it and it might take you 5 minutes to run through that quest every time. 1024/30=34.1333 runs. At 5 minutes each... you'll hunt that item for nearly 3 hours "optimally." Ok, 3 hours isn't really bad, most people can probably dedicate that sort of time to a game in a night.

...trouble is, that's an "easy" hunt in PSO.

Psycho Wand is a rare enemy drop. 1/512 chance for the rare enemy to appear, 1/204 chance for the item to drop from that rare enemy. Now, that looks really good right? 1/204 doesn't sound too bad...

...until you realize that the "real" odds are 1/104448. I seem to recall the "optimal" quest for that hunt only containing like 12 of the enemies in question, eating up 2-3 minutes each time you'd run it. 104448/12=8704 runs, at 2.5 minutes average... That hunt is statistically likely to take you 362~ hours, or 15 DAYS of actual played time.

Sure, you could also hunt it from a different enemy in Episode 2, but that still comes out to a hunt that will take you around 4 DAYS of just doing that one quest over and over and over.

All for the CHANCE of getting a rare item that isn't really worth it when slightly lesser items that are almost as good are much easier to obtain.

1/299594 from a Gran Sorcerer in order to get a Psycho Wand on the GC version. It was more like 1/1500000 from a Chaos Sorcerer on Version 1 and 2.

To this day, I've only ever seen one person find a legit Psycho Wand; that was the Mil Lily drop with Purplenum. It's something like 1/42. Which is still insane but nowhere near as bad.

Don't even get me started on the odds of finding rare weapons with good stats. It's easy enough to find a bare-bones Frozen Shooter (staple item for gun users), but finding one with "Hit %" is a task since you only have about a 5% chance of any weapon having a Hit% value when it drops.

I don't normally sympathize with hackers/cheaters but there comes a point where you just want to enjoy the game and not go insane looking for a literal 1/1000000 item.

probably some item from diablo 2

Came in to say that. A Zod Rune had a drop rate of 1 in several million from some enemies (and at least 100,000 on average) IIRC. A recent patch increased the High Rune drop rate a bit, but it's still very low. I've never found a Zod despite me playing the game a ton in the 18 years since its release (17 since HRs were added). I have found most others since the better drop rate though, including a Cham (the one below Zod).

There are Lower Kurast runs... https://www.diabloii.net/forums/threads/lower-kurast-lk-faq.720492/

Some Unique items are almost as bad. There are a handful I haven't found (Death's Fathom in particular).

The ATMA program shows drop rates: http://www.atma.incgamers.com/

There's probably worse in MMOs, but I'm not as familiar with them.

That thing was only rare because they removed an item from the game that lets you repeatedly fight the encounter that drops it.

In the PSP release, it took me only about 4 hours to get pink tails for the whole party.

Think the original drop rate was 0.00003%. 3 in 10,000,000

Oh yeah, Hit was ridiculous lol.
When I played on the PSO Ultima server not so long ago, I had something with a lot of hit, but they modified the game....a lot.

On a server with a decent economy it's not hard to get geared up decently in a short time (V units, good mags, ATA boosting barriers, hit sacrificial weapons, Froozers/Sneedles, hitless Heaven Strikers) but going for high-end stuff will cost you lots of time, lots of photon drops/crystals/spheres, or both. BUT despite all that, PSO still rewards skill and teamwork over gear anyway. Too many shitty Dark Flow/Berserk users who can't stay alive, too many people who don't know enemy patterns or who go into fights with reckless abandon, LOTS of people who can't avoid the one-shot kill moves, etc.

I have to say I really like Diablo 3's Primal Ancient system because this is the type of shit that always bothered me with this intense micromangement of gear.

You can't just vendor shit because you have to inspect it to see if there is like a +1 stat advantage over the item you're already carrying.

But once you get Primal Ancient you're done.
