I was skeptical going into it, but by the time it ended, I was speechless. Most atmospheric movie I have ever seen. There were points where half the theater was in tears. Ending was unexpected and powerful.

It has received almost unanimously positive reviews (critics calling it a masterpiece) and is up for Best Picture at the Oscars. Definitely lives up to the hype. Highly recommend. 10/10 Wow.

Thanks to @madadude for the recommendation. I rarely go see movies in the theater, but glad you convinced me to.

For those who don't know, it is a romantic drama about a guy on vacation with his family in Italy for the summer (takes place in the 1980s). He becomes romantically involved with a girl, but begins to develop feelings for a male guest that his family invited along with them. The story is a passionate exploration of relationships and sexuality.

What I dont get are the people who say they wont watch it because it is a gay romance movie. That is as absurd as a gay person saying they wont watch straight romance movies. At the end of the day, this is a great story, and it would be a shame to miss it.

I will be honest, as a gay guy, they perfectly captured the whole awkward/angsty exploring your sexuality coming-of-age phase that all gay guys go through. Definitely hit home. Timothee Chalamet did an amazing job with the role.

If you really want to go there, only 3 countries in Europe have an age of consent of 18. In Italy it is 14. Furthermore, the relationship is initiated by the 17 year old, the older guy repeatedly asks if it is ok, and the 17-year old's dad is aware of what is going on.

That looks like its exactly the type of thing people at Sundance eat up.

And that kid looks really underage. A gay romance? More like a movie about some creepy mid-20s guy taking advantage of a horny teenager. If the lead wasnt attractive, this movie would feel like a REALLY different thing.

The problem in this setting is that although technically since they are both in Italy, they aren't breaking any laws.

But they are both American and clearly the laws there are different. What about the older man's upbringing? If he grew up in America then he'd certainly know that getting intimately involved with a teenager is illegal in his country. It would/should also make him emotionally uncomfortable.

So with that said, he'd be legally and morally conscious (from his American POV) that sleeping with this teenager would be illegal/immoral were he in America, but nuts to that since he's in Italy(?).

Hmm.......from that perspective, I'd feel a bit weird watching it.

And that's actually the problem I have with this movie. The older partner is more mature and physically and emotionally in control in this scenario.
