My abusive step-father loved to bully us with food. When my oblivious mother went off to work her night shift as a nurse, myself and my older brother and sister and my younger sister (his only biological child) would have dinner together.

If we ever said we didn't like something, he would make sure we ate it in front of him and refused to let us leave the table until we'd eaten.

This might seem like standard parenting, but the vicious, poisonous way he would treat us was definitely not normal.

Sometimes he would say "You'd better eat that - or I will eat it and you'll be in trouble."

This lesson became askewed because he was a greedy fat fuck and we didn't know whether he wanted us to eat it or to leave it for him.

As we got older, he would threaten to starve us. "That's MY food I'm giving you." he'd say. "If you don't eat it, I will throw you out of the house and you'll starve."

If any of us misbehaved, we would not be fed. But still have to sit at the dinner table while everyone else did.

Thankfully, that's all over now. But my older sister has three kids and I went for dinner at hers the other night and she was yelling at her kids to eat their food or never eat again.

I went insane at her and told her she was a shitty Mum.

We're all a bit messed up from our childhood, but miraculously none of us have eating disorders.

Bullying your kids with food is not ok, you guys. You're gonna mess them up and they might get an eating disorder and die.

Please be good parents.

Wow. That's messed up. I'm really sorry you and your sister had to go through that ordeal. That's not right. Your sister may want to consider talking to someone like a therapist about this to evaluate the food relationship she is establishing for her children. The cycle of abuse can continue on unchecked and it was right to say something.

Food is necessary, not a luxury. Make no mistake that is abuse to withhold food from those in your care, or to use food access loss as a punishment for other behavior.

I mean if it's something like "eat your food or go without" when a kid acts up I'd hardly call that the same as smacking your kid across the face just because they wouldn't stop crying as a example. The fact of the matter is kids do and will act up. Even more so at meal times and bending to the kids demands is just asking for trouble. Still opinions are opinions I guess.
