If you were a parent would you demand that you eat dinner as a family every time?

Were you always forced to eat dinner with your family altogether as a kid?

I was always forced to eat dinner with the fam. This might be an Asian thing, most of my friends who were also Asian were always expected to be home for dinner at a certain time like it was a daily task.

Probably at first as they're growing up and then relax it as they get older. Want to be sure they're actually eating and have at least some insured family time. Probably weekdays only, though. I know I found it really frustrating as a kid to have to be dragged to the dinner table when I was playing games online or something, but it was the right thing to do, imo.

Not strictly. Rules for the sake of tradition are shit, and to be ignored. It's not a bad thing to share meals, but I don't expect anyone to wait for me to eat, nor will I wait around hungry for someone.

That and if I had to eat and talk with people about nothing relevant, every single day, I would lose my shit.

Generally yeah. My family didn't do this, at least from the age of me being like 8 onwards, and I think it was bad.

We're all busy and often eat separately in the evenings but we try to get together as much as possible, usually a couple times a week and it's always fun but it's not the end of the world if you can't.

We use to up until I was in my teens and my brothers about 8-10. And this happened before the internet and gaming were involved. Idk why it happened. I ended up becoming the only schmuck in the family that kept asking if we could eat together. And I kept on it for years but nothing. And yeah, I genuinely, deeply feel like that was a bad thing. It began what felt like everyone splitting apart and that feeling persists to this day.

If I had my own family you bet I would demand we eat together. Maybe not every night but definitely most nights. And no phones at the table.

I wouldnt force it but I think its important and I feel like I'm closer to my family because of structured "dinner time" when I was younger

but dinner was also about the only time everyone would stop and be together consistently, and if we had some other "family time" I may feel that dinner together is less important

Shared family time, daily, will be a thing. Dinner is the easiest window for all this to occur. Obviously once they're older and start being more social or something it'll taper off but it'll be a common thing through the teenage years.
