The oil was slightly below room temperature, and I turned off the iPod as soon as I could.

I've had it standing up for the past day or so to let it drain thru the ports & speaker.

Anyone know how likely it is I'll need to get a new iPod? I'd like to think I'm past any sort of frustration at this point and now I'm more curious than anything.

I was expecting it to have been hot oil and been like "help = new iPod."

ooh. Instinct says that you'd need a new iPod yesterday, but now that I think about it, oil is nonpolar and nonconductive, so it wouldn't short-circuit anything. It'll probably still screw something up, but you might be ok.

Google likely has answers

Depends on how clean the oil was, and how good you are at getting it OUT of the ipod.

Oil isn't conductive and won't fuck things up, but it'll cause a heat issue, and creates a potential fire hazard as a result, and if the oil wasn't clean, it can and will leave deposits.

The oil was about as dirty as it normally gets when we dump it; dark enough that it got opaque within 2-4 inches (maybe?). The iPod happened to fall into the container used to transport it from the fryer to the disposal container outside. There were also crumbs and the like from the stuff cooked in the fryer (chicken fingers, waffle fries, and the like), though I didn't see anything like that on the unit when I pulled it out -- which I want to say I did within two seconds of it falling into the oil.

As far as getting the oil out... I don't even know how to open up an iPod Touch. As I've mentioned before, I have it standing up to (hopefully) allow the oil to drain thru the ports & speaker. I've been checking on it and moving it every time I see an oil stain, which I think have been getting progressively smaller.

No matter how fucked your device might be, I can promise you that it does not have infinite oil inside of it.

I mean, yeah, obviously, but there's always that lingering doubt which persists in my mind despite basic logic.

Rice would work with anything, since all it does it keep idiot users from dicking around with the phone and breaking it more

Oil is probably not conductive so it wouldn't short out the electronics like water. It probably works just fine, it's just impossible to clean.

Huh.

Finally turned it back on. Seems like it's working fine, but clearly some of the oil has gotten inside the screen, because it appears discolored or not as bright as usual.
