It's easy to view mass genocide at a distance because we have no familiarity with it; everyone is familiar with rape. It's more of a marketing decision than an artistic design. I tend to think the use of lightsabers, thermal detonators, and blasters, instead of physically bladed weapons, fragmentation grenades, and projectile firearms follows a similar suit. Star Wars has very little blood. Blood turns a specific subset of audiences off.
