Indeed, although the purpose behind such tropes typically is to minimize audience loss from graphic/upsetting material. It's easy to view mass genocide at a distance because we have no familiarity with it; everyone is familiar with rape. It's more of a marketing decision than an artistic design.

I tend to think the use of lightsabers, thermal detonators, and blasters, instead of physically bladed weapons, fragmentation grenades, and projectile firearms follows a similar suit. Star Wars has very little blood. Blood turns a specific subset of audiences off. The SW approach is effective at minimizing loss of that subset, without making those who do not mind it feel the piece was softened too much.
