It's super-easy to have a favourite in each conference at the very minimum, since meaningful cross-conference competition (i.e. for playoff spots, and playoff series) is so rare.

For me it's less "I also like this team" and more "I dislike this team the most and will tolerate them winning if my team loses".

I'll also root for a team if they're going against a perennial winner like the Penguins, but that's less about me enjoying that first team and more about me wanting to see something new and exciting.
