Ah. That makes sense.

I still feel like I'd be looking at the script and asking, "Do I have to say the line 'It looks like a magic wand'?"

So did I. Felt like Shadowrun but in modern day and not the future.

So is twiddling my thumbs =P
It was a movie with an interesting premise that delivered very little on that premise. Almost nothing happened for the entire duration. It had a ton of antagonists without even a single one being entertaining, engaging, sympathetic, build up or well motivated. The entire premise of the different fantasy races and their social standing was barely touched upon and the small part that was, was some of the most ham-fisted social commentary I've ever seen.
It's certainly a movie that exists, but I don't find it good or even bad enough to be entertaining.

You can basically just have the entire history of the LotR series as the backstory to Bright.

I only wished they expanded on more how fantasy creatures always existing affected world history. Like, apparently stuff like the Alamo still happened, and modern countries still exist. So where did they all come from? How did orcs, elves, human coexist throughout history? It's such a grand premise that was "wasted" on a buddy cop plot. I kind of wish it had been a Netflix series instead of a movie.

I did enjoy Bright tho surprisingly.

It was about as good as the first film -- minus the obvious absence of Will Smith. It made a few mistakes, but then so did the first one.

On RT the Critic score for ID4 2 is just few points higher. 27% compared to the 31%. However the reviewer scores.. ID4 2 get blown away. It is 30% to 86%. So it seems he made the right choice.

It's not the quality of films that is different. It's that we're a bit more demanding today. You can't make a film with incredible plot conveniences, underwritten characters, and hokey messages about unity winning the day. Not anymore.

If the original Independence Day came out today, people would say that Will Smith's performance was the only good thing about it.

I've very casually thought about an alternate history world like this.

My idea is that orcs would replace the French, so France has a reputation as a vicious, war-like country <_<

It's more than that. When ID4 came out, it was new and fresh. There had never been a major-budget disaster movie of that scale before. People went not because of great plot, writing, or acting but because it gave them something they had never seen before.

Fast forward a couple of decades and we've seen hundreds of these types of movies. Hell they basically define Emmerich's career. No one is impressed with wide-scale, major budget destruction because we've seen it over and over and over again. When the freshness is gone, people are going to start looking at the other parts of the movie, and it just doesn't hold up.

Maybe he read the scripts and decided one was worth his time and the other wasn't? And guess what people ended up liking Bright and not liking ID. Maybe he has a good eye for a good project.
