It's just an issue of quantifying to what extent the soda has already affected you, no matter how small. Water is obviously the healthier alternative, which I don't believe anyone would argue with, but I've been proven wrong before lol. A lot of the health problems I see in older folks are a result of the same bad habits that have been repeated for decades. As far as what affects you more adversely, the cigarettes do. Simple, you are dying of thirst, have searched anywhere for drinkable water and can find none. If you don't drink something within the next few hours your toast. You find some Soda.
