Idk why it sounds so grating to me.

the only dub animes I can watch are DB/DBZ and FMA, sometimes Naruto/Bleach, and early One Piece

I agree that there are some genres and shows that are generally better one way or the other. I think "cute girls doing cute things" shows that have a mostly female cast (like Kill Me Baby, New Game, Umaru-chan, etc,) are almost always better subbed, while action/shonen shows (like DBZ, JoJo, Black Clover, etc.) are much better dubbed.

I can watch both just fine though. For action shows that haven't been or may never be dubbed (like Black Rock Shooter, Princess Principal, etc.) or shows that have an incomplete dub that will never be finished (like the Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha franchise) I'll gladly watch them subbed. Or if a show that would usually sound better subbed has one of my favorite English VA's (like Cherami Leigh voicing Yoshika in Strike Witches, or literally any anime that Matt Mercer is in) I'll give the dub a realistic chance.

TL;DR: Subs and dubs are both good in their own ways.

Japanese dubs are like white noise and put me to sleep if I'm not already super hyped for it. Most of the time anime isn't good enough to justify requiring eyes on the screen the entire time, and it's much better to be able to just listen along during slower parts that use long still images and tons of dialogue.
