What is a family room?

Around here, we call the sitting room / TV room / hang out room "The Family Room", with a couch and TV and such.

call your insurance company if you have one

you need to get a water mitigation company out to do an emergency water extraction and dry out. some companies you could look up are servpro and servicemaster. see if they are in your area.

get started on that while you file a claim with your insurance company and let them know you have a water extraction company coming out. then you'll be responsible for your deductible and your insurance company will guide you on the rest to get any necessary repairs done.

likely there won't be coverage for the repairs to whatever caused the leak but if you get going now the ensuing damage should be covered. you want to make sure you don't let it keep leaking because most insurance policies have exclusions for repeated/long term seepage and leakage.

if you don't have insurance you'll obviously need to pay out of pocket. water extraction can be really expensive though. depending on how much water you're looking at thousands of dollars right there.

My family always called it a "living room".

Kind of a silly name now that I think about.

If your homeowners insurance was any decent, you call to open the claim and they send out their preferred water removal company. This is what happened to my wife when her upstairs bathroom faucet burst open due to the city working on the water lines around the corner. Since nobody was home, the water ran down the steps and flooded the living room, kitchen and basement. She called right away and EDS was there first thing the next morning.

The bathroom, master bedroom, living room, kitchen and basement had to be gutted and rebuilt. All was paid by the homeowners insurance. This was last year.

In the short term, you can rent a pump at Home Depot or Lowes. Depending on your floors you may want to pick up a squeegee. A shopvac and/or a wetvac - both of which I believe can be rented. Then lots of towels and hopefully you have a dryer.

Oh, I see you have a shopvac. Thats a good start.

Beyond that, contact your insurance and hire some professional flood restoration folks.

What is a family room?

Typically it is a room for family to sit and talk after dinner. It is usually attached to the kitchen and/or dining room and unlike a living room there are usually no TVs, books, or computers there. Usually it is just seats, table(s) and maybe a stereo.

Since I live alone, I use mine as a place to put my pool table.

So we called insurance to let them know whats up. they said we werent covered and somebody else covers this type of damage. idk.

okay so we called servpro and a local company, they got our info and said theyd call us back. So instead of answering the call my mom still thinks us with a shop vac will be fine.

we've dumped about 20-25 gallons of shop vac shit so far, and it only feels slightly more dry.

ugh i hate this. i dont know why she doesnt just get servpro after all we have money set aside for accidents in the first place.

this sucks.

Did you call a home warranty company or an insurance company? Have you verified what type of insurance you actually have?

They may have said that if you expressed you were looking for flood insurance. I would call back and clarify if your policy doesn't cover for accidental direct physical damage due to a water loss like a pipe burst and see what they say. Maybe you should call and use that exact phrase. Accidental direct physical damage from a water loss. Your mom may not have explained it correctly or you got a dumb claim handler.
