I'm considering buying the Dark Souls 1 Remaster coming soon. I know I'm behind, but I have a feeling it'll be great. I've watched my SO play Dark Souls 1/2 a little bit in the past, and it interests me.

Also, what kind of "hard" is it? How much genuine bullshit is in the series, compared to fair deaths and traps?

I see it compared to Monster Hunter often which I love. However, I have no idea how accurate this statement is.

Dark Souls can be hard, yes, but it really just boils down to being patient. Take your time, don't rush, be aware of your surroundings and you'll do fine.

My experience wasn't that good.

Played it at a friends for a while. My deaths never felt like it was my fault. I tried learning the timing and hitboxes and whatnot, but I got cheated out of a lot of fights because of seemingly random bullshit.

They're easily the best multiplayer games and going solo isn't terrible either.

It's one of those games that feels impossible in the first hour and then, outside of the occasional "stupidly hard" boss, is fairly manageable.

A suggestion: each dark souls (especially DS1) has a number of overpowered-for-early-game weapons you can get with a few "suicide runs" (heading into an area to get an item with the expectation that you'll die before getting back). If you find early game too hard, consider getting one of these weapons to help carry you through to mid-game where you'll have a better sense of the mechanics.

I tried Dark Souls 1. I thought the gameplay was kind of fun but I was turned off by the complete lack of direction or story. I guess there is some lore and story to it, but if there is, it's not in the first several hours...

Not worth it. Just cheap fights where every enemy is overpowered.

No, that's pretty much the point. The game is actually steeped with lore, but it makes you work for it. For example: new londo ruins has a significant amount of story but its told through visuals, item descriptions, and cryptic hints said by the rare NPC. It never "tells" you what it is, but there's a lot there. You're exploring a dying world like an archaeologist looking for what happened.

The direction generally comes from organic difficulty. You're told at the start your first "objective" is to escape the prison. Then you need to ring 2 bells. If you head towards where one bell is and enemies slaughter you, but in the other direction you can manage it.... it's pretty clear which direction to go. The game could have gated each "bell" behind a wall and forced you one way or another, but that'd just be hand holding.

The game also has a surprising number of optional bosses that are found by exploring. It rewards wandering the way an open world game does, but because it's not as "open" as a Bethesda game people tend to not treat it like one.

I don't know what game you played, but Dark Souls doesn't cheat. Yes, it is unforgiving when you make a mistake such as not being aware of your surroundings or not properly managing your stamina in a fight. But it does not cheat.

Well... let's be fair: Sen's Fortress cheats a little bit. They're lessons worth learning, but there are a few deaths that don't really give you a fair chance if you're going in blind.

Yes it did?

I was positioned far enough away from the boss that after a dodge roll I would be perfectly safe. Timed it right. He somehow moved towards me during an attack where he's been stationary up to that point.

It definitely cheated

I don't consider myself that good at games but I didn't find it that tough. It's challenging for sure, and some parts and bosses might seem impossible at first. But it feels very rewarding as you progress.

I have never seen such underwelming third person action gameplay in a game. Its possibly good but any game ive tried or enjoyed at least intially looked fun to get me interested.

All gameplay videos ever look like running through mud and dull combat with enemies that do a ton of damage.

It's a very solid, challenging game that really isn't cheap.

It's great because it's a game that is designed around a singular hard difficulty instead of designing the game around baby mode and just buffing enemy health/damage for hard mode.

And that's just the gameplay. It shines exceptionally in the atmospheric wonder department. It's just a really otherworldly experience once you get into the groove of the game and start exploring the world and piecing stuff together. It has this grand scale that all comes together in progressive chunks as you see it from a very grounded perspective.
