This is the same defense (or deflection) that prequel fanboys use when the prequels are criticized, just saying... I mean with the prequels there were definitely some soft-contradictions and incongruities with the OT. The Last Jedi is a similar case as it builds off its predecessor, though it was more like hard left-turns from what Force Awakens alluded to, and subversion for subversion's sake. You misrepresent it as "personal canon" as if the fanboys imagine the whole movie in their heads and anything that deviates will disappoint, when in actuality it's more about the reasonable expectations of the audience based on what came before.
