https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2018/01/hollywood-says-its-not-planning-another-copyright-extension-push

The likelihood of an extension of copyright protections is very small. Looks like life plus 95 years is the tentative final duration. I'm genuinely surprised, I never actually thought those would expire

This was never about Mickey Mouse since he's trademarked in almost all forms. This was about things not created, but used by Disney (Winnie the Pooh, Snow White etc.)

Can't they still just renew the individual copyright? I'd be very surprised if they just let Mickey fall into the public domain considering Disney was the major lobbying force behind extending copyright protections in the first place

Steamboat Willie's expiration is still 6 years away. Just because there's no plan this year to expand copyright doesn't mean it won't happen in the next few

The copyright for the first Mickey Mouse film, Steamboat Willie, is scheduled to expire in 2024, though Disney would still hold a trademark for the Mickey Mouse brand.

So Mickey won't fall out of copyright it's about the first movie "Steamboat Willie" not Mickey Mouse brand.

Years ago, people called this the Mickey Mouse law because Disney had such a big hand in the copyright extensions. We've lost some creative works because of excessive copyright law, and that's a damn shame.

Disney will get the extension, they now control about 40% of the movie business and 40% of Television. They have limitless money and a ton of pull.

But that's just 95 years, not life+95. Walt Disney died in 1966, so shouldn't it be in 2061?

You've never read a story about Earth-2 Kara Zor-L.

Fair. Maybe if he read the story of Ellen Baker, above average looks but excels at raising children and working a full-time job.

I've heard that in addition to Disney, a ton of lobbying was done for this by the heirs of George Gershwin, who are still making a ton of money off Rhapsody In Blue (aka that song in every United Airlines commercial)

It's 95 years for anything before 1978 (assuming the copyright was renewed properly until they stopped requiring that). For anything after that, it's life+70 for anything created by a person. For anything created by a corporation, it's whichever is shorter of 95 years from creation or 120 years from publication. There are no cases where it's life+95.
