Metal Gear Solid V

Hitman 2016 doesn't have the highest production values in the world so something like MGSV may blow your mind.

MGSV is a good game. The story/character development is weak but if you go in knowing that and not letting yourself get burned by the trailers then MGSV should be extremely enjoyable because it is in fact terrific with its gameplay

Stealth games really took a dive after the PS2 gen ended. Seems like games just started incorporating stealth instead of building around it.

Assassin's Creed Origins has possibly the best stealth of the series, but it's still more of an action/adventute game.

The Last of Us actually has really intense stealth segments, especially if you play on Grounded or Survivor. You pretty much have to rely on distractions and sneaking, since you can't just shoot everything.

I couldn't make it past the intro sequence in MGSV. I want to play a video game, not lay in a bed for 10 minutes then fumble around like a jackass for another 10.

MGSV's gameplay kicks ass -- it's mostly the other stuff people harp on. Dishonored 2 and Death to the Outsider were great, too.

On the indie front there is also
- Aragami
- Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun
- Invisible Inc

I'd also include Alien Isolation but that's also a survival horror game.

Hitman is the best stealth game from this generation however. Unfortunately it's a dying genre. Especially in the AAA space.

Oh, I got another fun stealth game: Republique. You play as a girl escaping some type of communist Big Brother-esque compound and you're only armed with hiding, fleeing and the occasional mace/taser pickup. It was a surprisingly enjoyable game when I tried it a few years ago, and it wasn't until the end I found out it was a mobile game remaster.

I would not say it's the best stealth game this gen, strictly speaking from a gameplay perspective and not factoring in the other issues that plague the game (like voice acting, average graphics, clunky movement), which makes it even worse. Each chapter is very similar to the other. The diverse locations don't add much to the level design. You can assassinate your targets in multiple different ways but the problem is that the game never forces you to be creative and whenever I felt like trying something new, I always ended up knocking them out or using my fiber wire or shooting them because it's just easier that way. The A.I. is also pretty dumb. And I was actually a fan of the first Hitman game but I never liked any of the other titles released afterwards. Just felt like more of the same.

Dishonored 2 is the best stealth game this gen and it is also a very underrated game imo.

Not for the story, perhaps, if you want to complete the mastery of each level, you'll have to go about things in a lot of different ways to get the various accomplishments.

It's fantastic. The Paris level was free last month. Not sure if it still is. I think you can at least try out the Prologue for free.

There's a ridiculous amount of ways to beat each level. On top of that there's a bunch of custom contracts made by the community and stuff like escalations and elusive contracts.

If you like any of the previous games it's well worth it.

Kinda. But it's not really in-depth and it's still unresolved.

Most of it is cutscenes that are happening behind the scenes without 47's knowledge that link the targets together.

It's pretty limited, but there are cutscenes and a story. I haven't played any of the others, so I can't speak to how it connects with those.

thank you both for the answers.

the only other Hitman games that I've played, and completed, were Silent Assassin and Absolution.

I liked both, but Silent Assassin felt cheap at times.

I'll probably pick this up soon.

Dishonored 2 and Death of the Outsider

MGSV is mechanically great but fails in practice due to garbage level design making it way too easy

The one thing I would say against Hitman is that the last few chapters are much less open and more restrictive than Paris and Italy. This is a difficulty thing, (levels are harder when there are more alert guards and restricted areas) but I find it less enjoyable.

Hitman 2016 is the most newbie friendly of the series. You can toggle waypoints for specific assassination methods if you're too lost (you can even change it so it tells you a general goal but doesn't give a waypoint). On top of that the map and HUD will point out if you're in a restricted area and who is a threat.

I am happy that it allows you to turn off absolutely everything. I did when i played it and it is one of the immersive experience ever in games.

I did the highest difficulty with no HUD and such in the last game but I honestly didn't find it all that enjoyable. I think high difficulty but still having a HUD is a good stopping point.
