When he was alive he was about as polarizing as you can get. Everyone always said he was moneygrubbing, ignoring his fanbase, and needed to retire. Even when he took a 50% pay cut a few years before he died, people just said it was a PR move and he already had a ton of money anyway.

Now all you hear about is how he was a beautiful and brilliant man, cared so much for gamers, etc. I'm not disagreeing that he doesn't deserve the praise, it's just interesting to me how quickly people changed their minds about him after he passed away.

Don't remember too much about his perception. Can't believe he's been dead for almost ten years, though.

That pissed me the fuck off.

For a decade, it was an accepted fact that he was a child molester. Then he died and that became a nasty rumor lobbied against the voice of a generation. Suddenly, every human being on the planet was that one person who never believed the slanderous allegations.

It's like, no, that is not okay. Either we ruined the life of an innocent man or else we're posthumously celebrating a monster. Neither one is okay.

I saw some interesting clips on this lately actually. I think if Michael Jackson's controversy happened in today's environment, it basically never would have happened. There were clips of the alleged victims family admitting to falsifying the entire thing, but this being the 90s there was no instant reddit viral media to spread that kind of news.

Michael Jackson's death just feels like everyone was in attendance for a public execution. We burned him at the stake, then we all washed our hands, ate our suppers, and talked about what a great guy he was.

It's like, no, fuck that. If he was innocent, we should all feel guilty for the pieces of tinder we threw on the fire. And if he wasn't innocent, then we have no business celebrating him -- not even to say, "Yeah, but he was a great musician."

It exposed a really ugly side of our culture which is that we don't really care what happens to people, so long as it's interesting.

I hope he was innocent.

But, then again, that's kind of like saying, "I hope an innocent man's life was ruined." It's a lose/lose situation either way.

Uhh... People liked Iwata long before his death lol. The bad press only happened after the Wii U's mediocre sales, and people liked him then because he cut his salary in half and actually took fucking responsibility for his actions.

Just because YOU didn't like him for whatever reason, doesn't mean like his famous speeches and actions didn't exist before. And to think we can claim to achieve object permanence after adolescence but the likes of TC prove rigorous science wrong

Iwata wasn't nearly as controversial a figure as you make him out to be. There was some criticism but not much, and it mostly occurred during the Wii U era, which makes sense tbh. I also remember his voluntary paycut being pretty unanimously praised.

Steve Jobs was always polarizing, people who hated him before likely still did afterwards, or claimed his death overshadowed other prominent technology people's death.

That being said, people almost unanimously agree that Apple has lost some of their direction without him around, even though he straight up said not to try and emulate what he might've done.

who the hell said that? I never heard such of a thing. Everyone saw his passion through the nintendo directs he was involved in with directly. The only people who didn't like him were probably the big whigs of nintendo like the board executives.

Also, Galileo. Not art but he is considered the father of modern science. He was the one to learn that the planets revolve around the Sun not the Earth. He made contributions in many fields from astronomy to physics. His theories were so controversial at the time he was placed on house arrest by religious authorities until he died.

Edit:He also vastly improved the telescope making it possible to see and study space.

Any negativity I felt towards Nintendo wasn't really targeted towards a specific individual. Iwata himself did a lot of cool stuff to engage fans, particularly his Iwata Asks videos that probed into the nuance of game design. He also did an interview with Arino that was enjoyable. Iwata was pretty personal as corporate executive.
